App Q&A testing by request.
I'm thinking thru options for adding another monitor to my 2012 iMac.
The Tbolt ports are occupied by data drive connections, one firewire 800.

I have this:

I know this doesn't support 2 monitors being plugged in, but could it support a monitor thru the DVI connection (on the side not in the pic) and the firewire dongle plugged into the display port (with a mini-dp to dp converter)?

No-- it probably won't work. MiniDisplay Port and Thunderbolt carry different types of data-- and to use the Thunderbolt specific data, you'll need peripherals that are designed to use and manipulate those kinds of data streams.

You can purchase thunderbolt hubs, though. Read the reviews before purchasing.

No, that isn't a Thunderbolt device, so you won't be able to use a firewire adapter with it. Displayport signals are not Thunderbolt signals so you cannot convert any Displayport connection to use Thunderbolt devices.
