iPod do i have to sync to get the gapless feature on my ipod?

i do everything manually on my 60g video ipod. the search feature is in there after the update, but the gapless isn't, as far as i can tell. is this because i don't sync?

I don't think so. I manually update and seem to have the feature. When I connected my iPod first time after the update iTunes gave me some message about sorting out the gapless playback on the iPod (sorry can't remember the wording). It also did this for the library.
