So I was thinking about just grabbing a 512 gb air. I usually have at least 1tb. I have 2 on my 16gb but im barely over 1tb since I got it. I figure ill use the air for lounging mostly and some light editing and I guess most of adobe is in the cloud, but I keep going back and forth thinking im going to need the space. What do you guys think?

If you are going to use this only for lounging and some very light work - then stick to 512GB or even the 256GB will do.

What are the chances you'll like the silent operation of the M1 MBA so much that you decide to use it instead of your current 16" MBP?

I don't know where you're located but on Apple US EDU store, you can get 7C/16GB/1TB for $1439 and 8C/16GB/1TB for $1509. That's only a little bit more than regular 16GB/512GB pricing.

In any case, you could always use external SSDs in the meantime while you wait for the 16" M1 MacBook Pros.

I think I saw the Samsung T7 1TB and 2TB for $150 and $250 respectively.

despite logic, for a new device I would get a 1TB

I have an iMac and MBP. use only 100M of 500M.
i just dont keep data files on my computers.
If I am working on a project I keep the data files on a home NAS box.

It really depends on your individual usage case.

I bought a Mac mini 2018 with 1TB SSD. I'm still at a very stable 11% storage usage after two years. My media libraries (music, video, photos) live on an external 12TB spinner.

In addition to your current usage case is how long you expect to own the device. Software (the operating system and applications) will continue to grow in size. When I recycle this device in about 5-6 years, I'm guessing that I'll be using more disk space.

You can make it do with 256gb, but you will always have on your mind the idea of saving space and not installing things you might want to try... I think 1TB is the sweet spot, conformably enjoy your system.
