Hello

I currently have an original iPad Air that I hardly use due to the age and speed of it.

I want a new iPad and decided without much research that i wanted a pro. However I'm starting to wonder if the pro is necessary.

I will use it for netflix, browsing, recording podcast audio and the odd game or whatever. I want to get a pencil and use it for Notes in work too.

What do you think would the iPad be enough for this? is a Pro overkill?

also with the talk of new pro's coming soon, are we expecting new normal iPad's too?

Pro has better screen + HDR, so for Netflix would be better Pro. Also, Pro has 4 speakers, non-Pro iPad only two - and both at the same side. Also if considering 12.9inch model, it has bigger screen to enjoy more from movies. And Promotion technology on Pro makes amazing to watch 60+ FPS videos (or 120 FPS slow-motion records at real time).

Classic iPad was released recently, Pro iPads look like they will get update in October.

Hi,

I personally think a standard iPad would be perfect for your use case.

However, the pro will probably have a much more satisfying pencil experience due to it having a laminated display (basically there its almost no gap between the tip of the pencil and the screen, whereas the iPad as a sizeable gap).
Additionally, the standard iPad does not have an antireflective coating, an annoyance when there is any sort of lighting that could reflect of the screen.

So if you just need a tool for netflix etc, an iPad would be suitable, but if you want a much better experience the iPad Pro will be the best bet.

Perhaps it would be suitable to wait till the new ones drop, and buy a discounted current generation TouchID one instead.

Hope this helps

A regular iPad is probably sufficient for your needs already. The Pro might see an update this year still.

Also, if you have an old iPad Air, try iOS 12, some users here reported that their Airs run much better after the update.

The Pro will give you a much better experience, but the standard iPad will be more than enough for your needs. You could wait another month until the new Pros drop and then buy one of the older ones and save some money.

If you’re okay with minor frustration then the 2018 iPad.

Just be aware that the memory is loopy with safari (lots of page reloads and crashes). Safari has been poop for a while,

Procreate behaves with 2GB of ram if you’re not drawing on more than 4-5 layers.

Pencil works well.

Movies playback is fine on the 2018. Speakers are decent too.

I do not have an issue with the screen. Thought I might coming from Promotion on a Pro, but nope.

The Pro has many nice things, but overpriced and intermittent touch related hardware issues with my now sold 2nd gen 12.9, I will skip Pros going forward.

Rule 1: If you don't know why exactly you need an iPad Pro, then you probably don't.

Just buy the regular 2018 model. We already got a new regular iPad this year, so we won't see refresh until 2019.

The weight of the pro is annoying but everything else about it rocks

My air 2 drives me nuts it’s too small

Some games are easier to play on a bigger screen (your hands won't feel that cramped) but conversely, having to move your hands over longer distance during gameplay may tire you out

Not quite!!!! I got the Pro 12.9 sort of as an impulse buy and at full volume it is an excellent Netflix machine due to the large screen and great speakers, and it was totally unexpected. So it depends.
