Do I need a receiver/amp for surround sound with mac mini 2010

As the title says basically, I'm pretty confused by surround sound?

you can buy a usb powered 5.1 or 7.1 sound card from best buy or other store but you dont "need" to have a amp or reciever i use one for games but its not needed just the 5.1 sound card or 7.1

Doesn't the 2010 mini come with a built in 5.1 sound card?

the audio out jack on the mini is also optical, you will need some sort of amplifier that will take an optical input. (can be in powered speakers, but you sill need an amp)
