Hi

I backup to an Apple TC. I also backup to an external SSD drive, also using TC. I use a second external drive to make a bootable clone with Carbon Copy.

Do I really need online backup as well? If so, what do you suggest?

Thanks

Jay

Personally I have the following backups

• TM
• TM to USB3 via CCC - kept offsite
• Backblaze cloud storage for W7 parallels

Parallels TM backup OFF

Parallels .pvm file backed up to first two

Backup procedures that I have read recommend three backups: onsite, offsite and cloud.

Backblaze are very good.

I would suggest TWO CCC cloned backups.

Keep one nearby the computer.

Store the second one "off-site" -- that means in a different building. It could be a locker where you work, etc.

The idea is that if you ever have a disaster at home, such as a fire or theft, you STILL HAVE a copy of your hard drive availalbe.

When I was working, I used a locker at work and updated the backup once a week.
Now that I'm retired, I keep my important cloned backups in my car on flashdrives and SSDs. The confidential stuff is on an encrypted drive, so that even if the car was stolen, all they get will be "a drive".
Works for me.

I also keep another backup in a fire and water resistant lockbox in the basement.
I don't use "online backups" of any kind. I don't trust them, and what happens if the company you're using shuts down? POOF goes your backup!

The reason I advise a cloned backup rather than Time Machine is that if you ever get into an "I can't boot!" moment (you'll see plenty of messages posted about that right here), you can generally get up-and-running again in two minutes by booting from your cloned backup...

No, if you get a portable drive, you can use CCC and take that to your office or offsite, in case something happens to your computer/home.

I have two CCC backups for full system restores, but also use TM for those times that I want to quickly and easily restore a document or folder.

I only have one full backup, to my time capsule. But I also have basically everything important to me backed up to iCloud. If a fire were to destroy my house, I'd lose a little, but not much, and nothing I couldn't replace/recreate with ease.
