Hi

Just jailbreaking my iPhone.

Do I NEED Cydia installed? Can I install it at a later date? If I don't install it can I still SSH into my iPhone or will NOTHING be installed?

Thanks.

First of all, why wouldn't you install Cydia?

Secondly, you do have to if you want the benefits of jailbreaking at all (no SSH without Cydia)

Ok

This is the second time I am jailbreaking.

What is the crap that Cydia already has installed when it laods up the first time?

Personally, I understand. I think Installer is way more functional and easier to use. But alas it hasn't been ported to 2.0 yet. Cydia comes preinstalled with a bunch of developer tools because it is more geared toward developers.

BTW only a few of the traditional apps have been ported to 2.0. They have to be rewritten (SMB, BossPrefs, etc)

Are there any reports of Cydia and its armada of installed packages having an impact on battery life?

Doubtful, they probably take up little to no resources

Interesting you should mention this because my battery life has been much poorer since pwnage 2.0. I used it on 1.1.4 (1st gen iPhone).

I've been trying to figure out what's causing it! I have everything setup the same. If anything, there's less on the phone because none of my old Jailbreak apps are ported to 2.0 yet.

so... do we need Cydia??? Please read the whole thing here:

is Cydia just like Installer.app...... for 3rd Party Apps??? and if you don't care for it can you not install it?

i read somewhere in this forums that when you use the Pwnage Tool 2.0.1 through EXPERT mode and don't make any changes, it is the same as SIMPLE mode, but it fixes some problems. i didn't quit understand everything, but i did the EXPERT mode and Unchecked the Cydia (as this is where my iPhone 2.0 FROZE the previous time i Pwnage it).

let me know, anyone, if that was okay?

I don't understand you guys lol. Why jailbreak the phone if you don't want third party apps? Cydia is the only way to get them as of right now

Some people only jailbreak to unlock their phones.

So I assume all of the people above have v1 of the iPhone? Because 3G hasn't been software unlocked yet. The OP never mentions unlocking, so that's all I'm going off of.

I just keep hearing people jailbreak their 3G iPhone for no reason

but if you are going to void your warranty anyway, why not go crazy and install everything that you can to increase the usefulness of the phone?

Because I want to decrease the chances that my phone will freak out and crash when I'm on an important call like my WM phone used to do all the time.
