Or can I just go with the purplera1n method. I used the ECID grabber application by difrnt and entered it on the purplera1n website, and saved the file. Should I go through the hassle of obtaining the iBEC and iBSS for the redsn0w method the Dev Team is going to use. I don't understand a lot of this, and I just want to make sure that after 3.0 I have a working Jailbreak. Thanks.

What is the difference between those and the purplera1nyday files obtained by using the ECID on the website?

I personally have no clue what the difference is, but if Dev Team says they think they will be needed for future jailbreaking, why question it? The terminal command provided by iClarified makes this process stupid-easy...props to them

the purplerainyday file will only lead to your iBSS not the iBEC. i'm not exactly sure WHY we need them (their some sort of signature files for your specific device) but the dev team says we need them; not trying to sound like i blindly follow people but they've never really let me down so i would just get them

I'm unable to get the iBSS file, no matter what I do on the 3GS, I've put it in recovery mode and I get nothing but the iBEC file over and over.

No worries, it just means you're not fast enough lol; literally the folder with the files appears for 4 seconds, and then a later folder should appear with just the iBEC.

Are you os x or windows?

I am on OS X and it's not a question of speed, my UNIX Fu is strong and via cli, I'm scanning the directory every half second and copying anything that comes in, even if it only shows up for a blink of an eye.

I assume I'm in DFU (hold power and home, release power and continue to hold home)... the screen you get that shows a USB cord plugging into an iTunes CD?

Ah thats your mistake, that screen with the usb cord and the itunes logo is recovery mode. If your phone is in dfu mode the screen should be completely black. Follow this method: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4400

it gives a simple terminal script to run which makes getting those files pretty easy.
