I backed up my iphone and it was 4.8 gb (it was over 5 at first had to delete some apps) and when I tried to backup my ipad it said I dont have enough space. Today I tried backing up my iphone again and it stopped after a min and said i dont have enough space. Im thinking of buying the extra 10 gb of storage but im worried that wont be enough bc it seems like the total storage needed grows everyday. 3.6gb of my iphone storage is the camera roll. Do you think its worth it to buy the extra storage? Will 10gb extra be enough Thanks! What will I miss out on if I don't have my iphone and ipad backed up through icloud? Thanks!

I actually have the same question. Been wondering about this myself, because I've hit the cap and even once I stopped syncing some and thought I had 'deleted' my backups, nothing was deleted because no space was freed.
I keep looking all over the place for an explanation on just exactly how iCloud works, but really have found very little on the subject, sadly.
You'll miss out an automatic cloud backup of your devices.
Is it worth it ? Only you can answer this. I'd say yes if you don't import your pics on a computer often... Can you affort loosing all these pics ?
You could also exclude pics (or any other apps backups) from the iCloud backup and backup everything else but make sure you back them up with another method.
Here's a long story:
Last night I decided to switch from iTunes backup to iCloud backup. I want to wipe my iPhone entirely at some point and do't want to carry over the random stuff acquired from jailbreaking in the past. My camera roll had 1300 pictures and movies, totalling over 7gb of space. I synced my phone with iPhoto and backed up every single item, then went through the iPhone and deleted things I did not need to carry with me, ended up removing almost 4gb (lots of movies). Your app data size does not count against you with icloud, and i ended up with 3.3gb left to put into iCloud. Now I don't use iCloud with my iPad since my wife and I share it (it gets wifi synced multiple times per week to my mac). If I were to sync both with iCloud, I would definitely need to purchase more space. What I plan to do now is to try to keep my camera roll under 5gb, since photostream backs up immediately when I get on wifi, I can delete some pics off my phone after they are taken, and I can sync the video when I get home then delete it. If I can't keep it under 5gb, well it's time to pony up. If you don't want to spend the money, just go back to compuer syncing. My advice if you don't want to shell out another 20 (or 40) bucks would be to keep your phone on iCloud since it is the device that probably changes most frequently and is easiest to lose or break (and reload via iCloud), and put the iPad on computer syncing.

So I have surpassed my free limit and I don't want to pay for more storage if I don't need to. My proposal is this....I have over 1,000 photos in my camera roll and I've deleted a ton of video and pics but still leaves me over my limit. I am thinking my photos don't need to be in iCloud as much as my app data, contacts, sms, etc... If I switch camera roll backup to off and it prompts me that it will turn off camera roll backups and delete the camera roll backup is that okay? I just synced all pictures from my iPhone to iPhoto and i've done this in the past as well (all of my pics/vids are in iPhoto). I'm thinking that when I take a bunch of pics or important pics, I can just sync them with iPhoto instead of having them backup to iCloud every night. I'm just making sure i'm not missing something here by turning camera roll backup off from iCloud. Please help.
That should do it! The only issue will be if you restore from scratch or purchase a new phone using iCloud, your camera roll will be empty, and you would hav to import pictures from iPhoto into an album on the device if you wanted to carry them.
I wish it was more customized and allowed for selecting what to back up. Since I use iTunes Matching and have the videos on my PC. I would just assume back up everything but Pictures, Music, and Videos.

Having the camera roll backup OFF, the photostream will still work, right?
Everyday when I get back home, my iPhone pickups the WiFi and automatically upload then new photos to iCloud which will be sent to my iPhoto on the MacBook.
All this will still happen with the camera roll backup turned OFF, correct?
