I just bought an original 8GB iphone on eBay and I currently have AT&T pay as you go plan. Can I put my current sim card in and have it work or do I need to unlock the phone first? I believe it's coming with the 2.0 update. I don't plan to have a data plan, just use it as an occasional phone but mostly ipod and occasional WIFI access.

I would appreciate any other info from anyone who has used the pay as you go plan as well.

thanks for your help!

I recently picked up a UK iphone 3g on ebay, & bought a O2 PAYG Sim until the dev team crack the unlock. I popped in the sim and it works like a dream without any unlocking at all.

Here in the US. you have to unlock it because I'm pretty sure your PAY-AS-YOU-GO plan isn't an iphone plan.
You will have to connect your iphone through itunes and re'do all the junk work of activating and what not.
What the prompt to transfer your phone number to the iphone when going through the itunes set'up process, it will tell you that your phone number isn't compatible with the iphone. Just pwnage the phone, unlock it, pop your Sim card in and it should work fine.

thanks for the info. Does anyone use Pay as you go here? I'm just curious how well it works on the iPhone.

I've used Pay As You Go for about 4 years on a regular cell (Motorola V505) phone and it's definitely a very cheap way to go (it costs a minimum of $100/yr, which is what I end up using) for occasional calls, to call/text my wife and meet up with friends.

I'm pretty excited to get the iPhone.

This man speaks the truth =D

why don't you just pop in your payg sim & see what happens, you won't break it.
