iPhone 11 Pro Do I still need to swap SIM cards if...?

Do I still need to swap the SIM card from my old iPhone 5 to my new iPhone 11 Pro Max if both were purchased from my carrier (Verizon).

I'm only concerned that the phone number / texting work. I'm backed up to iCloud so I can do a clean pull of all my apps to the new phone.

Related question: do SIM cards contain all the storage for the phone, i.e. 64GB for my new iPhone? If yes, then I clearly don't want the 16GB SIM card from my old iPhone 5!

SIM has nothing to do with storage. Since you are staying on the same carrier, you can swap sims. If you ordered through Apple and purchased the Verizon model, or if you ordered directly from Verizon, there will be a sim in the new phone linked to that account. If so, turn off the 5, and then turn on the Pro. The new sim will now be the active sim. Remove the old one from the 5 and discard. You can now freely use the new sim with both phones by swapping them out between each other when you want.

I'm guessing the purpose of the SIM card is to store account info and phone number. It's the link to Vrizon in other words?

The new one will come with a SIM in it. So like Packers said, all you have to do is turn off your iPhone 5, and then turn on your iPhone 11, when you go through the setup it will activate everything. Then the sim in your iPhone 5 will stop working, and you can just pull it out and trash it.

Option 1: Remove your old SIM and put it in the new phone. It will work immediately. Toss/destroy the new SIM.

Option 2: Power off your old phone. Turn on your new phone with the new SIM in it, and allow it to activate your phone number on the new SIM. Old SIM will no longer work.

Option 1 is usually better because it lets you avoid the $40 “upgrade fee”. However, if you purchased directly from Verizon, they probably already charged you for it. You can probably call and get it credited back. If they say no, just persist and tell them you didn’t activate the new SIM. They will 99% of the time take that $40 charge off.
