I've had an original iPhone since it came out in the US, unlocked and on a standard O2 sim card.

I remember reading something a while ago (probably when 2.0 came out) saying that standard O2 sims work in the iPhone without needing an unlock now.

If I upgrade to 3.0, will my standard (non iPhone) sim work or will I have to wait for an unlock?

You'll presumably have to wait until the updated PwnageTool comes out, probably later today.

I have an ATT iPhone 3G and am currently in the UK and I have to have it unlocked to use my O2 sim in it, so unless the 2G varies with this somehow, you're currently stuck needing the unlock.

I just got this SMS from O2 which suggests to me that there's no need to unlock. I use a Simplicity sim from O2 but I registered that my phone is an iphone on the O2 website, that's how they know.
