Do Imacs get speedbumps roughly every six months?

More like every year unfortunately.

Last update before they were updated in March was April 2008.

Your best bet is the Buyer's Guide. Spring and fall are the most common.

Nowadays it's anyones guess with Apple - and MacRumours buyers guide isn't the most reliable but worth checking to get an idea when the current update was released. As far as iMacs go I would expect updates anything between 8 - 12 months from current release date.
