Has anyone bought a laptop from an Apple Store recently? Did it have ML pre-installed?

Some may, some won't. It's best to call your local store to find out what they have. Even if it doesn't have ML installed, you can upgrade it free. It won't make any difference in operation.

I agree with GGJstudios. Have you called your local store? If so, what did they tell you? Do they have any MBAs that came from Apple with ML loaded?

I went to the Apple Store last Wednesday just for fun, and surprisingly, the computers at the store weren't upgraded to Mountain Lion. I would have thought that they would have been upgraded the night before.

It does make a difference. A Macbook that came with Lion will have its firmware and serial number tied to Lion, so an Internet Recovery of a new, blank disc would install Lion. After installing Lion, one would need to use the App Store app in Lion to redownload Mountain Lion to get back to previous state.

Machines that come from the factory with Mountain Lion will have their firmware and serial number tied to Mountain Lion and a new install to a blank drive could go straight to Mountain Lion.

Once could work around this with a USB Recovery key made with Mountain Lion, but still it might be a feature important to some users.

The display models would get updated but I don't think inventory can be opened and sold as new any longer. No reason to with the up-to-date program.

I don't think you are going to see the Apple Store opening new machines to install Mountain Lion, then reboxing the machine. In the past they just dropped a Snow Leopard disc in the box for you, or now with Mountain Lion you get the free redemption code. I'm just going from memory with previous OS updates, and I don't recall them ever opening retail boxes to do updates. If someone recalls differently, please correct me.

There is also the issue I mentioned in my above post with regard to Internet Recovery.

I asked at the store my self. He said it will take a few weeks to update everything and get rid of old stock.

Your post is helpful for people to know, however, I said it won't make any difference in operation. I said nothing about recovery procedures, which aren't part of normal operations.

Ah... okay. Parse words rather than acknowledge you were wrong. Got it. ;)

I'm not wrong. If I had meant there is no difference in recovery procedures, I would have said that. I said operation. It's pretty clear to anyone who isn't trying to pick apart and find fault with my post.

This is incorrect information. Internet recovery will install ML. My MBA13 came with Lion. I upgraded to ML. When I reboot and hold down Command-R, the second option says 'Install OS X' and the icon shows a Mountain Lion. Getting Help online also indicates ML will be installed. No need to install Lion first.

You are talking about booting from Recovery HD, and if you have installed ML, you have a ML Recovery HD hidden partition on your drive and that WILL allow you to go straight to ML as you described.

I am talking about Internet Recovery if you have a bare drive with no Recovery HD at all, like a new drive. That will only get you a Lion download from Apple's servers and not Mountain Lion. You can read more about it here.

I was going to post the same thing. Once you update to Mountain Lion, the recovery partition is updated as well. It boots with the Mountain Lion install.

My local Apple Store inside the Augusta Mall has its display laptops (rMBP, MBP, MBA) upgraded to Mountain Lion. I can't tell you if every computer was upgraded because I didn't bother to walk around the whole store checking everything out, but that all probably doesn't mean anything anyway since the products being sold to customers will still be sealed in the boxes they were delivered in whenever that was.

That is correct, but if you have to replace a drive you will have no Mountain Lion partition to boot from and you will be booting to Internet Recovery in the system firmware (EFI), and that is only going to give you Lion if your machine came with Lion.
