Hello, I am considering to buy an iPad PRO 12.9" as my iPhone's screen is too small for me to read. Somebody mentioned that if I use my iPhone to create a hotspot for the iPad PRO to access the internet, more data will be consumed. Moreover, the bigger the size of the iPad, the more data will be consumed. Is that really true? I cannot under this as the iPads should take the same amount of serial data from the internet provider because they display the same amount of information. Larger screen iPads just display things bigger.

Screen size has no relationship to data usage.

Screen size has no relationship to data usage.

That is exactly what I think. Larger screen size just enlarges everything but the displayed contents are the same.

The guy said that iPad uses more data than smaller iPhone because apple puts more info on the screen in their apps that optimise the screen's size. He then mentioned about different data consumption depending on whether you use mobile view/tablet view/desktop view to view website on the iPad PRO.

Does that make sense? Do any of you understand what he is talking about?

Minor differences in screen size aren't likely to affect data usage when you're using dedicated apps that communicate over the internet; I doubt that Facebook scales the resolution of pictures that it sends to devices differently depending on the device. If it identifies as an iOS device it probably sends the same size pictures to any iOS device. That being said... for general web browsing there likely will be a difference between the data consumed by an iPad versus an iPhone versus a desktop. This is because modern web sites use something called responsive design, in which the layout of the web site may appear differently on different devices according to their screen size. And when they change the layout they will often cram in more or bigger ads on an iPad or a desktop as opposed to an iPhone. And again, I think this is mostly a difference between different classes of devices, not within a class of devices. An iPad Pro screen doesn't have a hugely different number of pixels (iPad Air 2 is 2048 x 1536, iPad Pro 10.5" is 2224 x 1668 pixels), so the layout between those two simply wouldn't justify sending very different contents. Bottom line is that yes, there probably will be some difference between using an iPhone versus an iPad, but it is not going to be so great that it is very noticeable.

Thanks. Speaking of ads, can I get rid of them on the iPad? I have not owned iPad before. Only a family member had iPad 2.

I'm a fan of the app "1Blocker"; it seems to really cut down on ads that make some sites practically unusable for me without it. It works great right out of the box, though there are tweaks available in the app if you find one ad network or one site is problematic. I also use the Firefox Focus browser for some situations where I want both ad blocking and privacy.

that might not be true. some websites do take note of the device being used and display different resolution of content. For e.g a picture on iPhone might be of a lower resolution but if you viewed it on an iPad it loads a higher resolution thus more data is consumed.

i just bought a 12.9" iPad Pro and i am loving it with a few exceptions-like the missing Videos App! One of the features they boast about though-and I am seeing some effects already-is the fact that apps don’t quit when you change to another app so you can end up with 5 or 6 apps working at once which i can’t help but think will consume more data. This new processor IS super speedy compared to other ipads i have used-and the 4GB RAM helps too-and should lead to less data swapping maybe? Anyway i live on $1000/mo so this was a HUGE purchase for me and I am still delighted. Go For It!

Yeah.. screen size has absolute no effect on data usage especially when all device like Macbook, iPad, and Smaller iPhone Max are using the same app the sizes of those three will use the same data consumption..

Except for Browser, obviously Both (any sized) MacBook and iPad (of all sizes)shows More Info much quicker since their Screen is much bigger, so technically the data consumption for both device registers the usage in much faster phase than an smaller Max iPhone Can..

Since in iPhone (witch is smaller) you Have to scroll, and scroll all the way and it takes forever to scroll in an iPhone due to small screen a.k.a 6.5" just to equalize the information that has already shown by iPad and Macbook (both device requires less scrolling)

but in the end, after your long way of journey scrolling the browser in such a tiny less than 7 inch screen (with an even smaller aspect ratio) your data consumption will be the same after you scroll all the information in whatever browser you browse in the phone...

Does the data consumption also depend on which browser you're using?

Yes.. but i think Google Chrome and Opera has fewer ads than Safari. But not that noticeable compared when you browse on an iPhone than on iPad.. after browsing for several hours you'll see that an iPad is slightly using more data than an iPhone due to the fact that iPad/MacBook Shows more information and has more chance of seeing ads (disadvantage of bigger screen when it comes to data consumption) where as iPhone has smaller screen and shows much lesser ads and cookies to none at all

All the functionality (I think, never used Videos all that much) is in the TV app under "Library". Background applications run just the same on iPad Pro as on any iOS device, the difference is the iPad may have more RAM and run a newer version of the operating system then your used to. If you don't want it running background apps you can turn that off.

If you're tethered, the Phone sees that as WiFi, but if you connect over a built-in cellular connection you have control over which apps will use cellular. There is a "low-data" mode, but I'm not sure if that's available on wifi only iPads.
