Do lens restrictions for the Nikon D40/D60, also apply to the older D50 ??

Hi,

I was looking at a lens, the Tokina 11-16mm., f/2.8, for Nikon DSLR's. The lens description states that it wont autofocus with the D40 and D60 bodies, but it makes no mention to the older D50. I own a D50, and I wonder if it will autofocus with my camera.

All Nikon mount AF lenses autofocus with the D50.

The D40/D40x/D60 do not have a motor in the body. That's why the lens must have one.

All Nikon mount autofocus lenses will autofocus on the D50, so you don't have to worry about that. It is saying that because the D40 does not have a built in autofocus motor, thus the lens has to have an autofocus motor for it to work on the D40/60.

Will a D50 AF with AF-S lenses? Meaning does it have the contacts for lenses with the focusing motors? Pentax's version of AF-S lenses also have screw drives for those bodies such as the K100D which don't have the contacts for the lens motors.

Yes. The original kit lens with the D50 was not a screw-drive lens.

Yes the D50 and all Nikon AF cameras, going back to the old N2020 will work with AF-S lenses. Apearently Nikon started planning for in-lens motors 20+ years ago.

The first of the two mentioned should be able to autofocus with the D50. The advantage is that the first one is $400, and the second one $580. Apparently there is no major change, except that the second one, can now be used with Nikon D40 and D60 bodies.

The second one has improved coatings of the lenses (which should have a small effect, probably not enough to justify shelling out the extra cash) in addition to the focus motor. As long as you don't plan on upgrading on anything smaller than a D90-class camera (which have built-in focus motors), there is no reason not to save the money for something else.
