Do navigation apps work well on EDGE?

Hi, I have a 32gig 3GS, and in my area, we don't have 3G service.

I'm considering getting Navigon, because I really need a GPS and this whole GPS-on-the-iPhone deal sounds great. But will it be too slow using the EDGE network? I know it has a built-in GPS but I don't know if it uses the AT&T network to get the instructions.

Well, almost all navigation apps download all maps to your iPhone, so all that will be dependent will be the GPS (which works regardless of Cell Data, albeit a bit slower but it works).

So, only if your navigation app downloads on demand or as needed its maps are you going to see any effects. Otherwise, no EDGE will be fine.

Navigon comes with its own maps, I'm not sure if it uses a server to obtain routes but you should be just fine with EDGE. Won't affect the GPS speed which is what really matters when your driving around relying on it to get you where you are going.
