The reason I ask is that my wife is buying an 8GB 3G next week from the Apple Store, and after reading the stories both here and on the official Apple boards, I don't fancy taking home a 3.1 pre-installed iPhone.

Especially as we're going right in the car and up north to visit my wife's family for a couple of days after picking up the iPhone, and we don't want to be halfway there and realise the thing is knackered.

Depending on the week build of the iPhone, it may come with 3.1 installed, so the sooner you get one the better...

... so you can fulfill your jailbreaking/unlocking needs ;)

Oh, so you assume someone wanting earlier firmware wants to Jailbreak?

Sorry, but I have no desire to Jailbreak the iPhone and no desire to run Nintendo emulators, custom themes, or any other programs on the iPhone ... I like how the device runs natively thank you very much. Also, with the o2 Family bolt on, one person pays £7.50 and the other four family members on o2 PAYG can phone one another, unlimited calls and texts. Yes, one person pays £7.50 and all five family family members enjoy unlimited calls and texts for the month ... so no need for unlocking it either it seems eh?

I simply don't want the 3.1 issues plaguing a brand new iPhone on the day it's bought ... I cannot be arsed with the hassle.

Just look at the serial number..

On the back of the box, there's a sticker with the serial no. it will be in this format:
XXXYYXXXXXX

What you need to look at are the YY, meaning the 4th and 5th digits. Those 2 digits represent the week in which the phone was packaged. You need to look for anything that is 36 and under. 37 is a risk, could be 3.1 and could be 3.01. 38 would be 3.1 for sure.

The only reason anyone would care whether or not their new iPhone comes with 3.1 would be if the buyer is looking to jailbreak and/or unlock.

There are no "3.1 issues" ... stop worrying about it and go buy your damn iPhone.

On a new iPhone, there are no issues with it firmware unless caused by a hardware defect which Apple will happily swap out or repair.

Also, 3.1.0 is a more refined 3.0.0, so you are getting even less bugs and crap.

Also, there is no point in having 3.0.0 unless you are planning to jailbreak/unlock.

Well, actually he'd be getting even fewer bugs.

Away you go and don't talk rubbish ... stop being such a pretentious arse and assuming things from an innocent question.

As for there being no 3.1 issues ... I suppose all the threads in this very section of the forum are prefabricated nonsense? Along with those on the official Apple discussion boards?

Some people on this forum need a life, seriously ... the way people are jumped on is appalling at times.

Thanks to those who actually answered the question and took it in the context it was asked.

It's appalling to see a genuine question leapt on by the pretentious mob because, in their high and mighty opinion, it automatically means I want to Jailbreak an iPhone.

I've owned both generations of the iPod touch until recently (1st and 2nd) and never even been tempted to Jailbreak them. I keep referring back to the default wallpaper for OS X because I like my products to look the way Apple use them in their stores and keynotes, hell I even pondered how to keep my menubar (transparent or not) after seeing it transparent at WWDC but solid on Apple's Snow Leopard pages on the official site!

I do everything by the book, so don't dare anyone insinuate "illegal" intentions by me. I don't want a battery that lasts 2 hours, I don't want calls to hang, and I don't want random shut downs ... those were my reasons for asking.

Some of the people here jailbroke their deices previously and when the time came of putting back there old settings or setting the phone up as new, they choose the the first one. That can bring many problems because of conflicting settings, missing files and such. Hence, the problems arise as you can read. However, a phone which is new or was set up as new from a jailbroken state, then it will work just fine.

Also, the people at Apple forums are always filled with problems, hence why they are called Support Forums, not discussion. However, the vast majority of upgrades goes fine.

Well, if it comes pre-installed with 3.1 so be it ... and I suppose it does make sense that if there's no 3.0 "baggage" left behind, then 3.1 will have nothing underlying to cause it lock up, etc like some have reported on the forums mentioned previously.

If that's the case, I may even ask the Genius who activates the iPhone to do the 3.1 upgrade in store should I receive a 3.0 iPhone 3G from their stock.

Thanks for your reply, it is genuinely appreciated.

Dude just shut up already. If you paid any attention to these threads you'd know that 98% of those who care about firmware are those that don't want to lose 3rd party features such as jailbreaking or unlocking.

Since you're being so sensitive about our statements like a little brat then all the more makes us think otherwise. There is absolutely nothing wrong with 3.1 , nor do you lose anything that 3.0 has unless its the MMS/Jailbreak/Unlock/Tethering hacks.

Go get your iPhone and be happy with it

I'm being "sensitive" because I am in shock at being made out to be liar for asking a question, based on your assumptions of what the question implies.

As for telling me to "shut up" and using the label "brat", please ... I'm a 30 year old married man for goodness sake, have a bit of respect. I will answer as good as I'm given on here, I'm not here to be spoken down to like a child, so don't bother trying to do so.

If I am guilty of anything it is being paranoid, which is somewhat understandable given the threads I have read on here alone.

I really, really do not care for the insinuations being thrown around in my direction. My issue is now, more than anything, about being made out as a liar ... I have no desire to Jailbreak an iPhone, my paranoia surrounding upgrading to 3.1 is bad enough, why would I want to risk a £340 piece of equipment for little reward?

Fair enough. Situation averted =)

I like the UK... you guys beat us on The Ultimate Fighter 9:D

Although Bisping did eat a delicious "right hand" at UFC 100

;) Thank you.

I must admit UFC is something I've never watched ... although I do enjoy watching "big" boxing matches when Hatton comes to the US to fight ... and gets destroyed by Mayweather. :(

You guys are fighting on the Internet......stop being a bunch of prepubiscent 12 year olds....BTW that's coming from a 16 year so you better check your maturity. To the orginal question, I think 3.1 is a legitimate scare, I can't stand 3.0 and from what I've heard by numerous threads of which I could link anyone in here with a snap. There not all about jailbreaking either, half of them are about the damn handset freezing and working worse than some **** free phone! It's a PHONE that means when you need to call someone it works well not some BS error because the firmware is a bunch of rubbish....

I don't think anyone was fighting, and I think aside of being told to "shut up" there wasn't any childish slurs flying around, so kindly mind your own business. The whole thing was sorted maturely between myself and Villanova, so your input was not required and if anything would serve to simply fan the flames considering it arrived some 12 minutes after everything had been sorted out and blown over.

However, you do address the points about 3.1 locking up iPhones. As it stands though, I am now happily reassured that should this new iPhone come with 3.1 pre-installed, it will be fine because it's on a brand new, blank iPhone.

No problems, all sorted.

So, to conclude this thread, I would like to reiterate:

The only reason anyone would care which firmware their new iPhone comes with is if they intend to jailbreak and/or unlock their new iPhone.

Beyond that, there is no reason for anyone to care. There's no need to make up threads about people having issues with 3.1 not related to jailbreaking.

It's okay to be wrong. It's ok to be 30 years old, married and also a brat. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Both my fiancee and I have 3.1 on our 3GS's and have no issues so far and we've had them both on 3.1 since it was released.

Not everyone - nor I imagine - the majority of people are having problems. Perspective is needed when reading MacRumors as the most likely posters here are going to be the ones stating problems. You don't get countless threads telling people their phones are working fine.

Not to mention the ratio of MacRumors posters to the over million who are on iPhones is next to nothing

When I got my last 3G replaced, 2.21 had just come out. The phone had 2.2 on it. They updated to 2.21 right there in Apple store.
