There are no current Macs (outside of the insanely expensive Mac Pro) that can drive a 4K monitor at 120Hz with full YCbCr 4:4:4 chroma sub sampling over HDMI. Something like the 48” LG OLED CX or C1 would be the perfect monitor if Apple didn’t continually cripple its external monitor support. Hoping someone can shed some light on whether the next MacBook Pros support HDMI 2.1. Thanks

Yes, how terrible ??‍♂️

Thankfully you can do it over TB4 or DisplayPort with DSC if absolutely needed. You can buy the equivalent monitors of those TVs instead.
Unfortunately MacOS doesn’t properly support DisplayPort with DSC. At least the existing 16” MacBook Pro with Big Sur doesn’t. I’ll wait to see if people have success with these latest MacBook Pros and Monterey

Most definitely a bandwidth based decision. There are almost certainly 4 TB4/PCIe4 channels. The fourth one is likely split between the SD card and the HDMI port (and perhaps a couple other peripherals, we'll have to see what System Information says next week). HDMI 2.1 utilizes up to 48Gb, TB4 has a 40Gb channel. You do the math. Even with the SD card using only a lane or two, a lot of the HDMI 2.1 benefits wouldn't be there
