As opposed to just the apple headphones/mic? I believe I read somewhere that the internal speaker is disabled when a mic is attached, but I would like to use an external mic in the car with my audio out from the dock connector port. Is this possible?

Yes, I think. You can use it with bluetooth headphones for the audio, and a mic plugged into the headphone jack, so maybe you can also use it with the dock connector as the source of the audio.

Try it and see. I just got the Cables2Go mic from Amazon for $5 for my iPod touch 3G, and it works pretty well. Certainly worth $5, and you might as well try. I do think that it will work, though.
