Last Friday night around 11:30pm we had a tornado warning which prompted a government emergency alert. So both me and the wifey set up XS Max iPhones for Do Not Disturb at 11pm which is our normal bedtime. So the next day our neighbors asked if we knew about the warnings. Apparently all of their phones alerted but ours did not.

I checked the settings and both AMBER and govt. alerts are set to ON. And these is nothing under DND which prevents these alerts from being received. Am I missing something? I sure would have wanted to know if a tornado was/is coming when I'm sleeping. Our carrier is Verizon, which we switched over to at launch day.

Did you see the alert itself on your phone in the morning? If DND got in the way of it it would have been just in terms of silencing the alert and preventing the screen from lighting up, but the alert would still be there on the lock screen or Notification Center, like other notifications that come in while the device is in DND mode.

Emergency alerts seem to be hit miss, imo. I am on ATT and the phone rarely goes off for weather alerts. Family member with Verizon, goes off more often, but, has also been quiet when cable provider flashes alert on TV.

Add in latest Presidential Emergeny Alert test where some phones never heard a chirp (me included), seems to be really random. And if house is a bit of a dead zone re: cell service (ie. Me), can see where notification not getting through.

I did not see the notification of the alert from last week. We both got the presidential alert on 10/3 so I know the new phones work. It is strange how alerts are hit and miss though. Normally we get 2 bars inside the house so it should work. I was just wondering if the DND could possible block the alerts.

To confirm, did you check Notification Center for old alerts?

I assume you mean pulling down on the home screen...... yes and I regularly check and clear them.
In that situation it doesn't sound like DND was involved as it seems that the alert wasn't sent to your devices.

One other question- if the mute switch is manually switched on will the alerts still sound?

In my experience they will (and will bypass DND).
Interesting, because I've had the exact opposite experience. When my ringer switch is on silent, I NEVER have gotten an audible emergency notification. Kind of a problem if you ask me...

Thats what has happened before. It will show in the Notification center but no audible alert

Maybe there's some setting that gets passed on with the alert to override or not, or it's in some way carrier dependent as well. But I've definitely had it go off both when my phone was on silent/vibrate via the switch and even in DND mode at the same time (which unfortunately is the kind of thing that pushed me to disable them after a few false alerts about windy weather from a few states over came in in the middle of the night over a period of s few hours).
