My older MBP is running Big Sur because Monterey is officially not supported. On multiple occasions it has shown an "update to Monterey" notification. When I click on it the System Preferences open only to tell me that my macOS is up to date. It doesn't make any sense. Has this happened to others? What is Apple's reasoning for this?

Yes, I get update notifications to newer operating systems on unsupported Macs. Why does Apple do this? Likely because the updater doesn't check compatibility and second, because Apple wants you to buy new hardware.

there
we need to take into consideration The humans who work at apple are really not that smart,
accountable for or even thrifty.
why should they add a default or code that knows the specific mac won't load Monterrey?
that would cost money and waste time. things  can't afford to spare.
