I love how some of the jailbreak tweaks. But considering that as using a jailbroken phone, where you could lose a jailbreak any time with a restore, for whatever reason, either accidentally or being forced to because the device is almost useless that the only way to resolve an issue is by restoring. I always feel apprehensive at paying some prices for jailbreak tweaks, since I don't know if I would always have my device jailbroken. I know what some people are gonna say, "Then just don't buy it then." I always think when there is a "premium" price for an app that I'm not sure will be useful for me even in a week, I just can't shell out the dollars. (Even though I probably do spend money on crap in other parts of my life that wouldn't be as useful to me.)

i think you are overestimating the amount of people who lose their jailbreak.

its not as common as one would think.

yes it can happen to anybody at anytime (those who are never satisfied and keep adding/removing/changing tweaks are perhaps more at risk) but you need to have a lot of bad luck too.

i like to think that the odds of completely being unable to save your JB are in par to being mugged down the street and having your phone taken from you.

yes, it can happen, but you can't live your life counting on it.

if you stick to the mainstream apps and tweaks - those that people talk often about - you should be ok.. its experimenting with obscure ones that could potentially damage your jailbreak. every time i read someone lost his jailbreak he mentions one tweak i have never heard of.

Sure some tweaks seem to be a bit pricey (iBlacklist and MyWi 6 come to mind) but for the most part I think they are reasonably priced. Most tweaks I have purchased only cost about $2. I think that is reasonable. If the tweak is really good I don't mind paying a little more either.

As far as the possibility of losing your JB, it seems that if you stick to the well established tweaks and stay away from pirated apps, you should be fine.

That's actually a really good point. I never thought about it like that. I mean $10 for something that I really use/enjoy on my phone that I'll never see from Apple is worth it - but not if I lose my jailbreak. Then it's $10 down the crapper.

Then don't jailbreak. Not a complicated decision.

Not to mention when a tweak doesn't get updated.

Deck comes to mind. Wish I had that 2 bucks back

Or Quasar at $10.

Nevertheless, it's often not the developer's mistake they don't update. In many cases (e.g., that of Quasar) they can't, no matter how hard they try.

We can all "thank" Apple for this.

I don't blame apple for patching jailbreaking exploits at all. In fact, I'm happy that they do.

Apple SHOULD be blamed to force us to rely on JB tweaks to add even basic functionality like TRUE windowing and multitasking. Which is existing in both Android 4.x and Windows 8 RT on the operating system level and can be utilized by any app, allowing for seamless multitasking and/or windowing, both with built-in stock and 3rd party apps.

On iOS, currently, we can't do anything similar as Quasar, the only JB tool to offer this, can't be made compatible with iOS 6.

This is all Apple's fault. They should have provide us with a decent, flexible OS, and not a 2007 joke.

I have no complaints, other then moving wallpaper and widgets.

Well, I do and a lot of other people too - see for example the Quasar thread here.

It's really hard to put up with a 2007 OS when both Android and Windows RT are way more powerful. Too bad they run on inferior hardware; this is why I still stick with iOS as a user.

So on android would you be complaining about the inferior hardware??
There appears to be a trade-off on both side. No use in getting mad over it.

This is what I meant:

iOS, currently, runs on superior hardware: the iPad 4 is better than anything Android, let alone Windows RT and some aspects of the iPhone 5 are also better than those of competing phones (e.g., the overall camera performance, including the panorama mode, which I just love and prefer to anything else, even dedicated P&S cameras).

Apple could easily become the Nr. 1. in the hearts of us geeks if they implemented some advanced stuff in their stale iOS like windowing, true multitasking and so. (Again, these are already supported in both Win RT and Android. Win RT's approach is absolutely wonderful.) It wouldn't take them much time / effort.

I don't think jailbreak tweaks cost too much, but there are more paid vs free ones these days.

And I think it hurts, especially when you think about tweaks like Dashboard X. Dashboard X could have been GREAT, especially when the widgets were actually working widgets, unlike crappy iWidgets which aren't at all. But it didn't go anywhere.

It works both ways. Every time there is a new iOS version, the developers don't know if there will be a jailbreak and their work will become useless.

What do people mean when they say they "lose" their jailbreak? I mean, it's not like it can slip out of your pocket or something. My iPhones have been jailbroken for the majority of the last 6 years and I didn't "lose" a jailbreak once (that is, unless I decided to).

Well, it can happen. Hasn't happened to me because I have always been extra-caotious with installing new tweaks (no pirated repos, no themes at all, no absolutely unknown stuff before testing them on, say, an old-bootrom, always-JB'able iPhone 3GS first etc.). But it can happen to people installing every single theme and/or loading cracked stuff from pirate repos. There are quite a few threads here at MR too explaining themes resulting in having to restore.

----------

So you develop IOS for Apple? Or is this more armchair expert commentary?

They have the money, resources, they know their own OS like the palm of their hand, they know what Win RT / Android are capable of. They could come up with a decent windowing system.

Heck, even the 16-year-old dev of Quasar could come up with one. Someone without much resources or the source code of the OS. Don't tell me Apple couldn't release at least something similar...

It even happens just installing an updated app in Cydia, some have glitches which interact with other apps.

Or installing Siri ports on older devices and then uninstalling wil sent it into a loop.

Plenty of ways to 'lose' your jailbreak.

Was this all a surprise for you when you bought your iOS device(s)? They're not forcing anyone to do anything...

How entitled can you be? Stop acting like a spoiled child.

Ah well I never considered my phone fast enough to sport some fancy theme. I guess that was actually a good thing :)

Well, my iPod touch 3G will be jailbroken forever. Even if I have to restore, the latest software for it is 5.1.1, which has been jailbroken. So, I don't really have a problem paying.

Typical Apple fanboy speech. I just don't understand why you're here in the Hacks forum if you're perfectly happy with stock iOS.
