Actually the chips are quite sophisticated and would only use 95W when under 100% load.

When not busy the processors actually underclock themselves and consume far less power.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that the new i5 iMac 27" doesn't use any more power when idling or doing light tasks than the 3.06 24" did.
 
Tom's Hardware has a nice article on the consumption of the Core 2 vs. Core i5/7 platforms and taking into account performance.

You might consume more power in the short run over a Core 2 Duo but you'll get more work done per watt regardless. Your task will finish faster and using less power over all.
