I've had my i5 for about two weeks now. I've transferred many large files over, installed multiple processor hungry programs, ran multiple programs at once and it still has not crashed!!

This is my first Mac so I'm pretty blown away at my computer not crashing on me, I do not take this pleasure for granted. When I installed Windows 7 on my PC a few weeks earlier, it crashed several times after a clean install. :D

Could have been a hardware issue. My Windows 7 installs haven't crashed yet.

They wont crash very often, but they do have a funny few minuets every now and again. I also get kernel panics when using the DVD player.

Applications crashes are much more common. The last time OS X locked up on me was when trying to use clamshell mode.

Otherwise Safari and FireFox haven't forced a hard reset in ages and sleep does seem to work now.

I've had my iMac for about a week now. It's seen a fair bit of use and has been running constantly now for about four days - I sleep it at night. There has been a lot of fairly heavy multi tasking through the week using handbrake, eyetv, mactheripper, photoshop, iphoto and itunes without any problems whatsoever.

Up until now I've been using my macbook and as such it was turned off most of the time, so we will see how standby goes for a few months - If the electricity bills get too large I'll cut it off but really I doubt I'll notice as the power saved by energy efficient lightbulbs is waaay more than the iMac uses on standby...

to check, open terminal

and type in: uptime

According to that, my wifes 42 month old macbook has been running for 68 days without a restart.

I had to turn off the power to do some electrical work over the weekend, so my iMac only shows a few days...otherwise probably about the same amount of time.

My G4 Mac had an uptime of about 5-6 months at one point. My 2009 Mini also had an uptime of about 2 months running 10.5. However, running 10.6 i've come home only to find that its crashed at least 3 times now since i've installed it. Not exactly happy about that at all.

In the 8 or so years i've been running XP i've yet to have it crash on me (the entire OS that is, apps have certainly crashed).

Good to hear the new iMacs are stable, I've got one shipping to me on Dec 11th!

In the meantime, I don't think my Hack has EVER crashed without a reason that I could accurately establish, and I've had it on constantly for months straight. There are things that would crash it reliably - like sleep, from which it would not wake, and using more than 2 gigs of RAM with the DVD drive (it was PATA, not SATA, that's why) are prime examples, but they were all things I knew not to do, and could easily avoid.

When I installed Win7, I got three crashes the first week. Once I disabled any power management but display sleep, that resolved it, and I think I've only had one unexpected restart since then.

My early-2006 iMac has only locked up once in almost 4 years. It sleeps when I'm not using it and I only restart maybe 3 or 4 times a year.

It really comes down to the software in this case.

If your iMac were to crash it would be a hardware problem.

OSX, for me, hasn't crashed since 10.3.

My old iMac had the power supply replaced 4 times, but it was in permanent use.

Macs are GREAT at multitasking.
Even the fastest Windows machine can never compare to OS X.
I think it's because of the way the OS is written.

But I'm glad you're enjoying it!
haha you will never go back to Windows, I Promise ;)

it's the way unix is written. windows was never designed for multitasking, unix was.

Don't worry, they can crash. Better yet, wait till you have a hardware problem and have to lug the damn thing to a repair center and wait weeks for a fix.

im using the late 2007 imac 20" (first aluminum imac) and it froze on me for the first time the other day.. i was baffled... i was only using one safari window and the whole system froze, it has never happened to me before and i was so sad... but since that would have happened 100000000 times by now with a 2.5 year old pc... i gues its okay... just did reset it and it was back to its reliable mac self...

That is exactly why I switched to Mac. Windows SUCKS at large data transfers. It simply cant handle it without third party utilities.

(Before anyone argues I work in IT and guarantee to have done more large data transfers then most people on this board.)

My mac handles large data transfers flawlessly. At work however, almost every time I dont use a third party utility windows can't copy everything across servers for whatever reason. Unreal.
