I do not have much free time to read up on a lot of the news. I read through the new iMac that will match iPad design language announcement. However, it was not clear if it would be limited to iMac, or if iMac Pro is included. Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere.

I have mentioned before in other threads, I highly regret getting my i9 iMac due to how incredibly LOUD it gets. I need the performance, but it just gets WAY TOO LOUD and too fast. I was able to get it for $1,500 less than the iMac Pro and the system was on-par or better in some areas. So just $1,500 for better cooling was not worth it.

However, I am looking for a change. I want to sell my current iMac which is maxed out (RAM upgrade from OWC). Do we expect a newer iMac Pro to be released? Do you think the new iMacs will take on the better cooling of the iMac Pros? 10th gen Intel is even hotter than 9th gen, so I would think Apple will be forced to increase the cooling.

I believe there are new CPU and GPU chips suitable for the iMac Pro due later in the year, so I do not expect an update at this time. It is not clear what will happen in the meantime. Apple might let the old device carry on until the update. They might suspend it until the new chips are available because the new iMac could overlap the performance so much. It is also possible the new iMac is so good that there is no need for a Pro model any longer, although I doubt that.

Rumours suggest a redesign for the iMac. I think there might be an entirely new cooling solution that is hopefully better than the iMac Pro has. If they keep the old look, they may adopt the Pro cooling system for the standard models.

WWDC looks like being monumental. I wouldn't be sure of anything until after that.

That seems to be the consensus on MacRumors. MCK from KGI Securities has a good record and hasn't mentioned anything about the iMac Pro for this year. Most are hoping for 2021.

I'm sure that would please everyone but it would indicate a major reshuffle of the iMac line since the improved cooling system is one of the selling points of the iMac Pro.

While I don’t disagree that an iMac Pro refresh seems unlikely, I am not sure who will be buying an iMac Pro at the current price after an iMac-refresh at WWDC.

I would be very disappointed if the new iMac did not include a GPU option superior to the Vega 56, for example.

And think it will be a near certainty that a build with an 8-core processor and 32GB of RAM will be available for far less than the $5k iMac Pro entry price.

The universe of buyers who are willing to spend $1,000+ for a Xeon instead of an equivalently specc’d i9 seems like it has to be vanishingly small.

10th gen Intel processors are even hotter than the current i9-9900k in the 2019 iMac. If they do not increase the cooling, the new iMacs are not going to be good.

That is not entirely true apparently.
There was a video explaining how the 10th gen is actually better than 9th gen. Something to do with the packaging and the layering of the chip.
So no, 10th is not hotter than 9th :)

i9-9900k is 95 W TDP
i9-10900k is 125 W TDP

Its hotter. 10th gen i9 is 10 cores instead of 8. And my i9 iMac is already struggling with the heat.

The imapro rumor was for late this year. My guess is that whatever they do to it, the price will creep closer to the mac pro. I'm hoping for significant and generalized improvements tio the new "imac" which for most of us could negate the current advantages of the current imac pro. We'll see soon enough.

This is what I was referring to

And you can see in his video sustained power is 120 TDP. Which matches Intel's specs. Go to 2 minutes 30 second in the video. Power consumption is higher than 9th gen. Having the CPU needing 250 W in his example means they have MUCH BETTER cooling than an iMac would have. So the 60 degree temperature of the CPU won't work in the iMac. There is no possibility with the current cooling that i9-10900K will only get to 60 degrees. Its hotter, needs more power which needs better cooling to dissipate.

I would sure love Apple to come out at WWDC and announce new iMacs “shipping now”. One can dream right?
