Do we need any cleaner in Catalina?

Hi, I'm used to Onyx software which is free for deleting cache and general cleaning of the system but so far there isn't a catalina compatible version yet.

I wonder if it is necessary or it's a total waste this kind of "cleaning software" in Catalina.

If you installed/uninstalled a lot of apps on the machine you are using, I would suggest to go over Library folders and delete leftovers that some app can leave.


Many people delete apps by sending them to trash, but very few are aware that there are files in Library that need to be removed as well. This is not case with all apps, but it is with many.


Other than that, i would not waste my time with so called "cleaner apps".

I use AppZapper for uninstalling apps and getting rid of their remnants in one click and I also use CCleaner to get rid of regular junk files.

With read only system cluster less real value as system cache isnoff limits as are temp and var. So it's limited to user cache.

I 2nd AppZapper. I've used it for around 10 years along with First Aid in Disk Utility and that's about it for me.

indeed it's so easy and I like how it shows you what files were there and were removed

No operating system is perfect. There will always be a need for maintenance tools.

Unfortunately, neither Applejack or Onyx will work with Catalina yet. Hopefully fixes will soon be available.

I've suggested a cleaner called AppCleaner as there are sometimes large differences in the files the two gather, AppZapper vs AppCleaner. The latter finds much more. AppZapper was part of the delicious-generation of apps. There hasn't been any updates for it in what seems like forever. TrashMe is one good cleaner too.

I do use OnyX or its sibling; Maintenance, as a system cleaner at times. It has to do with me more than anything. macOS does have its own cleaning runtines

However, once in a while I clean up more than that. I probably should stop because the OS is sluggish at first as it rebuilds your system and application cache and often re-indexes Spotlight too. I think I'm tinkering too much with macOS to stop cleaning it - for peace of mind.

If its a cleaner that can fix bugs in Catalina then yes, absolutely.
