I just tried out E-sim for the first time and in my opinion, it makes the need for a sim card slot very minimal. if apple added dual E-sim then it would still take up way less space than a sim card slot. The missing spot could be used for a bigger battery or CPU and the lack of a port would make it much more difficult for water to enter the device. Eventually when apple gets rid of the charger port there would not be any openings on the phone at all and the phone would be much more waterproof

My understanding is 99% of carriers in the USA already offer E-sim so I don't think compatibility would be an issue. If it is, then apple can release both versions like the rumors say.

The only question is what will apple do with the missing space on the physical sim models? I would not expect them to make bigger batteries on only the phones without a reader. And I also don't expect them to make the whole spot a dead zone although that's entirely possible too I guess

Thoughts?

The only thing we know for sure is that if is no SIM slot, there won't be any empty space left behind. The engineers will use the space.

That would be an outrageously silly move by Apple.

Some of us actually do travel internationally…

Most times if I am outside the EU (where you can roam for free), I pick up a local sim to use… a heck of a lot cheaper than paying my UK provider.

But, often providers do not have eSIMs or they are tied to long term contracts — useless if you only need it for a few weeks.

eSIM is still not widely common in many carriers. While probably the US version could be SIM-Less, I'm at least there needs to be an international SKU that has a physicial SIM Card. And use cases like the above would make it less convinient, I also travel abroad and do the same thing.

In Indonesia. Only 1 provider out of a total of 6 providers supports esim at the moment... Idk about the sales of IPhone in Indonesia but thats about it.

Given Apple is privacy focused, it makes sense to continue to offer physical SIM.

Water resistance is a non-issue unless you plan on ejecting the card under water. With the elimination of 5.4 and 5.8-inch models, internal volume is less of a concern.

Personally, I don’t think there were any serious plans for an eSIM only model this year.

As much as I love and want to see the full potential of eSIM be realized, carriers around the world think otherwise, and without carrier support, it won't go anywhere.

In Indonesia, only the number 4 carrier supports eSIM. The rest have no signs of any plans in supporting it.
Even in Singapore, a rich and advance country with 3 Apple stores, only 1 of the 3 carriers are actively adopting eSIM.

I believe the latest iPhones already support dual active eSIMs, so the hardware and tech are ready. It's the carriers.

I believe the main 4 UK networks offer esim on there pay monthly plans, i found it handy to have rather than having to carry a second phone while i would be ok with a esim only model and its likely it will go that way eventually but not for the 14
