hello there,

i've read a lot about noises coming from macbooks and especially the macbook air, too. but there doesn't seem to be a solution for what i'm experiencing.

it's a constant high pitched noise on the left side, pretty much right next to the power connector. interestingly enough i am able to get rid of it by using QuietMBP and setting its slider to its lowest value - 10ms. however that just isn't a solution since the fan instantly kicks in and the battery is being killed, too.

i'm regularly working in _very_ quiet places so it's really annoying and i can't leave it like that. do you have that as well and just bear with it or should i contact apple about it?

I had a similar problem with my black MacBook Core 2 Duo. I took it to an Apple store and they said that some amount of "processor whine" is normal and is unavoidable. I personally believe it is a problem with Intel processors that will be fixed in the future, but for now we have to live with the annoying whine.

On a sidenote, I noticed that the whine is significantly decreased if I'm using a Bluetooth mouse. Others have found this too.

Hope this helps!

I've been using ShhMBP since not too long after I got my MacBook, and even though it says don't try it on anything other than a 1st gen MBP, I've been using it on my MacBook for over a year with no problems, and I get no processor screech. It's basically use-at-your-own-risk since it clearly states it has no warranty. It works great, though, you hear the whine for a second or two when the login window displays after you start up your Mac, but then ShhMBP kicks in and kicks out the whine.

My MBA is utterly quiet until the fans kick into relatively high gear. In my office-style usage, I hear the machine maybe once or twice a month (mostly if I get bored and start watching videos).

A constant whine doesn't sound normal to me!

a lot of laptops have it these days..some less. but not everyone can hear it..if you are over 30 or got bad ears, you can't hear this noise.
my air got it too..but it is really quiet.
if you turn on bluetooth and use a bluetooth device (like a bt mouse) it should disappear!

I'm not hearing it, but at age 41, that might be because of my hearing. Maybe everyone should take the test before answering this thread!

If you can hear the first sound, then you're qualified to answer.
