Other Do you believe or take into account the DxOMark score?

For some time I took into consideration the score of the smartphone cameras made by DxOMark. Not for the purchase of the device, even because I only discovered this from my iPhone 7 Plus, but to know if the camera of my device is really good. But I see some comparative videos of the iPhone Xs with some of the top of the list in DxOMark and see the victory of the iPhone Xs in several aspects. Of course there is also the personal preference for a more natural or saturated image, but in most comparisons, I see the victory of the Xs in the comparisons. I even see draws in comparisons on some qualities of photos. And you? Do you believe or access the list of scores on the DxOMark website to know if the camera of your current or future device is good?

I believe them up to a point. I find them good for getting a general idea about the cameras in a phone and how it compares to the competition. I'm just looking to see that they're in the right ballpark. As for saying phone A is better than phone B because it's 3 points higher, I don't personally take it to that level. Nor do I use them to make purchasing decisions. I know what I want, I'm just curious how they did with their cameras. Mainly I'm just looking to see if things are well received or getting dinged. Very high level stuff. I also validate their results against other reviews.

I do not. At all.

It is interesting information because I enjoy data and numbers, etc but the phone camera, for me, is not as important as it once was.
Now don't get me wrong, having a nice camera in my pocket is nice, I just believe phones cameras in the beginning stages of phones over the first few years of existence made substantial leaps in camera quality and, for me personally, the last 4 years or so have just been rather lackluster for lack of better terminology.

All smart phones are so close in everyday performance, it's just, pick one, go home and use it.

The “problem” with DXOMark scores is that most cell phone uses don’t understand how to interpret them, they only look at the total score, which, in and of itself is pretty meaningless. It’s just a weighted (DXOMark choosing how much weight to apply to each category, which may or may not have that much [per catagory] to you) total of the individual categories.
One should look at the individual categories and decide the individual importance of each to them and then you’ld have something much more useful.

Yeah, iPhone did really well. Are you surprised? samsung image is soft despite f/1.5. Nite mode on Mate is pretty nice.......but you compromise everywhere else.

I think there is some element of truth in the scores and it can give you a rough idea. However I think that most of the flagship phones are quite close to each other. Some of this will come down to personal preference too.

The Xs/Xs max and even the XR have really good cameras. I like the wide angle lens on the S10 + but I’m really satisfied with the pictures on my Xs max.

This is key to iPhone camera system, esp the XS. It is very well-rounded with no glaring weakness. It “just works.” Both pics and video are very good, if not class-leading. When you press the shutter button, you know what you’re going to get every single time. Consistency is key.

The only other phone that comes close to consistency is the Pixel 3. P3 does have class-leading Night Site...hopefully, we hear Apple’s version soon. But other than that, P3 pics are often dark and gloomy (due to excessive contrast; polar opposite of Smart HDR). And its video is just bad...epically bad.

You guys need to read up on Pixel 3 video capability (or lack of)...hilarious!

And after a mere 4 months of Pixel ownership, you get this: The Pixel 3 is Pissing Me Off. – Droid Life

The phone needs more RAM. The pixel 2 started lagging in the end because it only has 4GB. Google should have given it at least 6GB.

While it is true that P3 needs more RAM, the above happens even when you freshly launch the camera app OR just taking successive pics (with no other apps opened). The above is likely due to processor not having enough horsepower to process the HDR image quickly enough. Pixel HDR is more intensive than normal HDR...and the Qualcomm S845 just does not have enough juice to process all that data quickly. (In contrast, Smart HDR of XS does even more than Pixel HDR, and yet A12 is able to process it in real-time!)

This. Having been a camera buff for a loooong time, dxomark is not the last word into what happens when the shutter button is pressed. The comparison in the news forum proved that. Smart hdr is a great innovation and constantly overlooked as one.

Not sure if you guys know this...but Pixel 3 video is bad...how bad?

Well, you know about the epically bad microphone when recording video. Yes, it is worst than iPhone 7/8/X single mic. P3 mic quality is like something from Fischer Price toy.

But this is the kicker...its 60 FPS video mode!

Now, folks, this is about as dumb as you can get! Google, in all its wisdom, decides that Pixel 3 owners are NOT smart enough to know the difference between 30 and 60 FPS. So, while filming, Pixel 3 will change AUTOMATICALLY between 30 and 60 FPS within the SAME video! Yes, it will flip-flop back and forth b/w the two frame rates...sometimes quite frequently as you walk b/w sunlight and shadows (such as a tree).

So, when viewing your video, various parts of that video will have different frames per second! And you cannot turn it OFF!!

And what it does record is just very plain video with piss-poor audio and poor dynamic range because again, it does NOT have the computational power to adjust in REAL TIME the highlights and shadows down to the pixel level like the iPhone XS.

In the reviews I knew the quality of the P3 mic. In the comparative videos it was notably worse than the competitors. Much worse. But I did not know all of this problem with the P3 camera app.

As they said, incredible how in the iPhone Xs the HDR is processed in real time. Actually the device has a lot of horse power. And, as they said, the ability of the iPhone to just point and shot the picture is really impressive! It does well in all conditions. This I clap for Apple.

The camera on the XS really is impressive. Aside from the bigger screen on the max the camera quality and the speakers were worth the update from the X.

I’d say yes and no to this, I find their tears to be really artificial but many do go by them.

But for me I tend to go more by the photos members actually take in real world situations and post on this site or others. That shows me how good a camera is more the DxO Mark.
