For some the iPad means they can leave their laptops at home.

For others, such as myself I bring my iPad along with my MacBook Pro. Each has it's own purpose, the iPad to absorb content while en-route, and the MacBook to do work on.

Some also leave their iPad on the coffee table/around the house and head out with their laptops.

Which do you do?

None yet - but when it gets here it travels instead of the laptop.

For me the point is to save lugging a 17" laptop about everywhere - I typically only consume media on the move, I don't create much and can cope with the capabilities of the iPad for what I do create. Also, with a VPN link to the office, TouchTerm SSH and iTap RDP / iTap VNC I can do pretty much all of my 'day job' stuff on the move if I really need to.

My MacBook Pro has seen significantly less use since I bought my iPad last Wednesday.

I can't wait until my Apple case comes in so I feel more comfortable carrying it around.

My laptop has become more of a transportable desktop since I got my iPad but I still need a laptop for many work activities so I use my laptop at my desk and the iPad everywhere else.

On an upcoming vacation I'll be trying the iPad on it's own for a week so we'll see how that goes.

It depends. At the moment I carry both to work but I've only had my iPad for a day so am still syncing stuff to it. I can see a time in the not too distant future that I'll be able to leave the laptop at home most days unless I want to do some work in Aperture or iMovie.

I've done several trial trips (bringing both) to see if I can get away with just the iPad. My instinct is that if I'm only gone for the day or maybe even one night, I can get away with only the iPad.

There are also some times where I need to use some fairly big spreadsheets (100 columns, 700 rows). I can't imagine manipulating those could be all that fun, so I don't see the laptop going away completely any time in the foreseeable future.

I've found the only days I can carry only my iPad is days when I'm 'absorbing content' or doing very light work.

Since I create content daily and do other tasks not suitable for on the iPad I have to bring both with me. The iPad definitely saves me from pulling out my laptop as often as I used to.

But to go around day to day laptop-less with iPad only ... I couldn't do it

As a result of the release of the iPad I'm carrying more not less, lol.

A month later, I still find myself needed to bring my laptop along with my iPad on travels if I have any kind of input/work to do.

That's no surprise or disappointment though, I like my iPad for what it is.

I'm curious to see how others are making out with this. The hope by many was the iPad would mean we could carry less weight and bulk ... instead for me it's added to the weight of my bag, because even when I'm bringing my laptop to do work, I can't leave home without my iPad, lol.

I bring my laptop with me so I can sync across my computer, iPad, and iPhone but that's pretty much all I use it for.

ETA: I will most likely buy a mac mini for my next computer instead of a laptop because of the iPad

I feel a lot less lost without my MBP at work, that's for sure. I usually have my MacBook with me too, but more frequently than not these days it stays in my rucksack while at my day job, and the iPad is always open on my desk (work has started "discouraging" the use of personal laptops...).

It's probably a good thing. I have to work all day on terrible Windows XP machines that crawl, and its some kind of torture switching between my lovely wee MacBookPro and the horrific HP desktop...

I moved all my social network stuff wholesale to the iPad, so much less hassle (and several less programs that bring the poor HP/WindowsXP to its knees...)

I'm a web developer... why do I have to put up with these things :(

When I have my writers hat on (evening and weekends) I use my iPad and MacBook all the time - iPad for reference (effectively as a second screen) and MacBook for writing in OpenOffice.

I must admit the only laptop I ever owned was a HP old windows xp laptop, which I have reconfigured to run on ubunto.

I do not really consider that laptop to be a part of my computing setup, which is an iMac 2008 alimunium G7 3gb internal memory, And now this Ipad which functions as an extension of my iMac with air sharing, air video and drop box.

I can say that I feel I am able now to access and deliver data at a pace that really suits me.

I will be passing the ubuntonized laptop to my son to play around on.. He is only two at the moment and I rely do not trust him on the iPad for more than 10 mins at a time under total supervision of course :)

However to the original point this iPad goes everywhere I go... And I mean everywhere :)

I'm right there with you. I originally bought my iPad with the thought that I wouldn't have to lug around my MBP with me everyday but I've found, like you, that they both have their uses. I create content throughout the day so for blog posts, articles and so on I find my MBP to be a more efficient machine to use. On the other hand, when I'm at work or out and about I find myself searching for and reading content on my iPad. The iPad is much easier to get out of my laptop bag and set up than my MBP. While my laptop bag is a little heavier I still feel like I'm able to do things more efficiently while having both machines with me.

All that being said I think I'm going to experiment this week by carrying just my iPad and brining along my Apple Wireless Keyboard. I'll report back later this week on how it goes.

My laptop now lives on my office desk. I don't take it with me to meetings or client visits anymore, but it is still better than the iPad when I want to sit down and do some serious report writing.
