I've only twice had any Apple products engraved (by Apple). I'm curious why you do or do not engrave your Apple products, specifically your iPad and/or your Pencil.

I have owned many Apple products and the only times I've used the engraving service was for the iPod shuffle (the version that looked like a clip) and my latest Apple Pencil (2nd generation). For the Shuffle, I engraved it just for kicks. No particular reason. For the Apple Pencil, I thought that engraving it would make it easier to distinguish which Apple Pencil is actually mine if it gets lost amidst other people's Pencil.

I'm contemplating upgrading to an iPad Pro 11 inch M4 with nano-texture screen. I'm not sure if I want it engraved. I know I do want the Apple Pencil Pro engraved for the same reason I had my Pencil (2nd gen) engraved.

What are your reasons for engraving or not engraving?

I have never done it as I usually sell or gift my toys. If I didn’t, I still wouldn’t because the people I got to use cases.
Ah, I see. That's actually very nice that at some point you may gift your toys. I understand the aspect of selling it; that makes sense too.

I have never bothered with selling my stuff although I'm not against selling my old Magic Keyboard and engraved Apple Pencil in person. I just will need to have the exchange in person, not something like eBay. Just don't want to deal with the hassle of either shipping or not receiving payment etc.

I use cases so engraving is pointless.

Also, I rarely buy directly from Apple nowadays. You can save quite a bit buying from Best Buy, Costco, etc.

The AirPods is one I would like engraved but I don't think engraving is worth paying $30-50 more for the product.

Hmm, that's true. I hadn't considered that. I don't use a case with iPads, but they are either attached to a Magic Keyboard or something like a SmartFolio, so effectively encased. I never really use my iPad without either one of those, partly because I don't want my ring to scratch the iPad. LOL.

For the items I'm currently looking at, Amazon prices aren't too much better than Apple education prices. Yes, Amazon is a little cheaper, but I feel that purchasing directly from Apple means I will have better customer service IF there is ever a case where I need to return the item or exchange it within the appropriate time frame.

I am currently considering an iPad Pro M4 11inch 1Tb nano-texture screen; Apple Pencil Pro; and Magic Keyboard. The cheapest way to price this out along with a trade-in was doing a mix of purchasing from Amazon and Apple which came out to about $1994. If I purchase entirely from Apple with the trade-in and education discount, it amounts to $2046, plus I get the Pencil engraved. That's just a difference of $52 -- buying directly from Apple seems to give me a sense of, well, I can't say "peace" (LOL) but let's say a sense of security (??).

Yeah, I forgot about that. I think I too would like my next AirPods to be engraved. Hmm...

4 years ago I think we valued engraved ipad of a friend of mine and apple trade in shown 0 dollars. Internet is full of stories receiving penny on a dollar if engraved versus normal one.

Right now apple spelled out that engraved trade ins are fine, but people report downgraded values with mail in variant versus apple store.

This shady trade in part makes it useless for me.

I engraved my AirPods. Hard to miss them now.

I engraved my very first iPad (Mini 4). I would like to engrave my next one. I like personalizing my devices. The only reason why I haven't done it since my first iPad is because I've been impatient to get each one, and having them engraved delays their shipment.

Ok, this is good to know. It makes sense for me now not to have the iPad engraved. I do plan to have my Apple Pencil Pro engraved though. But in the meantime, I’m also thinking that no one would want my Apple Pencil (2nd gen) engraved with my initials (and nor do I want it in anyone’s possession with my initials though…hmm….dilemma)

I engrave my AirPods and Apple Pencil, because it clearly identifies that it’s mine (I don’t use cases or skins) and I’m less likely to gift or sell them. I do not engrave my iPad.

I don’t use my initials. Instead, I usually pick a word/emoji/numbers that I associate with something (e.g., frequent word in a song).

I never do engraving. My wife gifted me a 13” M4 iPad and pencil for my birthday and had them engraved. If I go to the apple trade in, it shows a brand new iPad having $0 value but they will graciously recycle it for me.

I like to gift Apple products and typically don't engrave for all the reasons given, especially trade-in value. However, I also always engrave the Apple Pencils because they are so easily lost, confused with someone else's pencil and it provides a way to distinguish between an "old" model pencil and the newer models. I also recently engraved the initials on a gift of Air Max headphones that will be used at a University. They will most likely never be traded in and the engraving will, hopefully, discourage theft or make them easier to find/identify, if stolen. Same with the case of some AirPod Pros that were gifted and are easily lost/stolen.

I like that! I have been trying to think of something else that feels both personal and meaningful to me, other than my initials. I haven't been able to come up with one so far. Well, actually my first engraving which was on the iPod Shuffle was engraved something like this:

\^,^/
Peace

Essentially an emoji of a face with hands raised up in the air, and the words peace underneath. That used to have more significance to me than it does now.

Anyhow, thanks for your thoughts as it has reminded me there may be some other words or text I could use.

I never occurred to me to engrave any identification on my iPad. It goes with me on trips, but stays in my carry-on when I'm not using it. I don't leave it in a hotel, but put it in the car "securely " hidden under the floor mat in back. I also don't have files on it, and never access files from the Cloud on it, but I don't know if that means someone else couldn't.

Never engrave iPhones, iPads et al. I did engrave my pencil because I thought it would be easier to lose (and then hopefully recover) than other devices.

I didn’t engrave my iPad because I financed it through my cell phone carrier. I did however engrave my pencil with Be Gay, Do Crime.

I did engrave my iPad, though I don’t recall what I put (either email or phone number, I think) because it’s in a case so I don’t think I ever even saw it. The pencil has my name on it.
