Of course I know the more storage room the better, but for those that have the 8GB iPhone, do you think that having a good amount of music (example 4-5 GB) along with pics/vids PLUS all the apps that it makes your iPhone run slower or maybe you max out the storage capacity of your iPhone? I'm wondering if people with the 8GB are hindered by the lack of storage.

Also I really want to know how much storage apps are going to take.

if you have 4-5GB in music and then want to add pics and videos which will add up to 1-2GB... plus apps... you will get low on space or at least be filling up pretty easily..

Apps weight like nothing compared to music/videos. Its not like you're installing Final Cut Studio on iPhone (about 50 gigs for basic installation!)

I deliberately filled mine to the brim and experienced no slowing of anything.
I have about 30 applications on mine not including the ones the iPhone came with. I have no use for more space than this. It's plenty for me.
IMO, the only issue is if you have no access to your computer for any length of time as in for a trip, etc., where you might be without a laptop to sync.

My 8GB iPod Touch (1.1.3, Installer.app 3.01 + Cydia/Telesphoreo) currently has about 20 different apps, a bunch of SummerBoard themes, about 30 pictures for wallpapers, 550 songs, 3 full-length movies, a TV episode, a bunch of music videos, and a bunch of video podcasts. Trust me, 8GB is PLENTY of room (coming from a 30GB player, I was surprised how much stuff I could fit on this thing!). If Cydia didn't move my Applications folder into /var, I'd have even more room, but even as is, I've got about 300MB of free space in /var.

The only reason I want more room is to be able to have 10 movies on it since I'm not sure what I'll be in the mood for. I can fit 3 plus music and apps but thats not a great selection.

I would say its very likely the iphone v2 will have 32gb which will be plenty for that. Hopefully it will have gps and sdk will provide some sick apps...I love it now but think it will something I won't be able to live without in the near future.

Can you fit 10 movies on it WITHOUT the apps? That's a lot of movies, you might just have to wait for that 32gb to come out to really fill it like that.

Thanks, this was very helpful. I guess I'm just really wondering how many apps I'll be able to add after I've put 2-3 GB of music and pics.

Does anyone know roughly how large an average app is? I know it will vary between the different kinds but on average from what you guess can see. Or maybe how much space is taken by quantaties of 20 apps?

Do you know how large an average app is? Or how much space 20 apps take up?

It should be obvious, but that depends on the size of each app.

Some are small and weigh in at 100k. Others are larger, but I haven't come across any that are larger than 6MB.

If you are doing emulators, it depends on the quantity and size of the ROMs.

If you are using a PDF reader, it depends on which PDFs you carry around.

How do you know you will have 20 apps? Which 20 are you going to carry around? Why is 20 the magic number?

If you find yourself running low on space, just carry fewer songs and videos.

IRC my apps and related files took up around a gig.

I have quite a lot of songs on my iPhone and it's just about enough, I'd say. My music collection is about 20GB, so if at any point Apple decides to release a 32GB iPhone (which I guess is going to be inevitable eventually), I'll upgrade and get rid of the one I've got. Hopefully by that point there will be a 3G version available too :D

Most apps that I have seen are less than 500KB. The ones that are bigger usually have custom graphics or sounds, like PocketGuitar, Drummer, and a lot of games. Cydia/Telephoreo was also rather large, and it moves all non-essential items out of the root partition and into the media (/var) partition, including your /Applications folder, taking a decent amount of space with it (~100MB).

In fact, if you don't install Cydia (or use BossTool to move your /Applications folder to /var/Applications), installing apps won't take any space away from your media partition, although I do recommend moving at least your Font folder to /var, since 1.1.3 + Installer.app + BSD Subsystem leave you with only about 20MB left in your root partition to install apps.
