I've been trying to use my iPad more for emails rather than just for browsing. Several times when I have tried using it for extended periods on a table with the Apple Case I found myself hunched over the table due to the angle of the screen which is uncomfortable. The solution below (ipad case plus compass stand) provides a better angle for viewing while still allowing for fairly comfortable typing. I was wondering if there are other stands/cases which allow for a steeper typing angle.

Thanks

It definitely is an unnatural position, and I usually end up on the couch with it in my lap. To keep it on a table, unless that table is low (like a coffee table), I can certainly see it being uncomfortable.

Try this case.

Or you can always get the keyboark dock.

For somewhere to start with stands, Google for Skadoosh (adjustable but on the expensive side), Griffin A-Frame (mid price) and Griffin Loop (affordable).

This stand is similar to the Compass, but it adjusts to six different positions:

A search on ebay for "iPad portable stand" will bring up plenty of sellers to choose from, I just grabbed the first one that showed up.

I bought mine about two months ago from another seller, and very few days go by that I don't use it. The Compass is gorgeous, but I was really disappointed that it isn't adjustable to other angles. That typing position is far too low to be comfortable for most users. I find sometimes I'll use a relatively low angle (but steeper than what the Compass can provide) and other times I'll find I'm more comfortable with a more upright position. It just depends on how I feel on a given day and how much typing I'm doing.

The more I type on the virtual keyboard, the more comfortable I get with it, and the less often I use the wireless keyboard. I do still pull that out for longer typing sessions though.

I got one ofthese for a tenner (UK eBay).
Stands up at three angles for viewing/surfing and when lied down it doesn't go flat but just a nice angle for typing. Nothing stopping me making more notches though for differing angles.

I type with the iPad resting on a squidgy cushion, which is adjustable in a lo-tech kinda way. ;)

The iPad's OK for making notes and writing emails, but the ergonomics of a flat keyboard on a flat screen are simply not condusive to writing for long periods (which is something I need to do).

Indeed. I shall mention the ergonomic design of the Apple iPad case makes it a rather "magical" yet truly productive product to use. The back raise of the case is quite close to the perfect and preferred height for landscape typing.

I had the same problem as you until I purchased the Yoobao V3 Executive Case. With its various positions it lets me prop the iPad up in a suitable secure position whereever I am (office, sofa, bed) and be able to type comfortably.

This also avoids having to buy a seperate stand.

See pictures below. Posted from another user.

There is also a large thread ongoing under iPad accessories for the Yoobao cases although not all have the possibility of having so many positions.

Finally receive my V3 today, fantastic design, love the multi viewing angle, and not a bad price in UK as well. (Compare to the incase one sell in UK, and is much less bulky:apple:)

No manufacturer package as the seller say damage during the transportation, but the seller ship with Jiffy postal bag.

Ordered from the official UK seller. (Reserved one after buying the V2 from them):D

Some pictures for you guys!

Yeah, I've given it a fair chance, but for anything longer than a paragraph I resort to the wireless keyboard

I love it, but I have kind of an unorthodox method. I'll write long journal entries etc., while holding my iPad in portrait mode. I just kind of walk around and type away with my thhumbs. Works for me and feels really comfortable, and the walking around kind of gets the creative juices goin'. Probably sounds weird, but I guess if it works...it works?

It works.. till you trip over a wire or stone.

I have turned my iPad into my primary writing device, completely replacing my laptop. I've written almost 60k words on it in three months, to say nothing of all the emails and forum posts and IM messages and on and on and on. I've written on tables in coffee shops, in bed, on the couch, and tomorrow I'll be on a plane too, taking just the iPad along for the first time since I got it.

It's not for everyone, and it's taken a little time to adjust, but once I have I have no more trouble typing on the iPad than a regular keyboard.

It works fine for me for shorter emails using the Apple case. If I needed to do any more extensive text entry, I would just get the Bluetooth keyboard.
