Bought a 2018 128GB iPad two months ago and still not sure whether to buy a glass screen protector for it or not.

Price is 20€, which is quite a lot got a screen protector, and I'd hate for dust or hair to get trapped inside.

I have a book case for it, which protects the screen when in rest.

Is the iPad screen easy to scratch or is it resistant? Does it have Gorilla Glass protection? Do you guys recommend buying one even when having a case or I'm I being to paranoid?

I want this iPad to last me for as long as possible, and obviously to stay in like new condition for as long as possible too.

Do you guys use it naked or with a case or screen protector?

Thanks!

I don't have a screen protector on my 10.5" iPad Pro. I use it with an Apple Smart Keyboard to protect it when not in use. I have not gotten any scratches or other blemishes on it in the year I have owned it. One thing that a screen protector can also help with is fingerprint smudges. The iPad Pro is notorious for being a fingerprint magnet. Not sure if the 2018 iPad is the same or not, just another reason to maybe use one.

I have an iPad Mini 2 since the day it was released (I believe 4+ years ago). I never used a screen protector and I have taken this iPad everywhere, including work, in which I am an electrician, I run the business off this iPad. I have tossed it in my tool tray, etc.

I can't find a single scratch on the screen. The Home button stopped working, but the screen is flawless.

As mentioned, there are a lot of fingerprints, but I only notice them when the display is off. And if I care about them at that moment, I wipe it on my shirt.

Yes I have one on my iPad Pro 10.5 and my iPad mini 4. They are easy to fit and I like the idea of my screen being protected from scratches and dirt and dust.

I do on my 10.5" iPP, not so much for protection but to reduce fingerprint smudging. I've used the tablet a lot both with and without the protector and I don't have a problem with glare and it does reduce smudging. It's also easier to clean.

I have one again now because I started using a different keyboard case with “regular” keys and wanted to keep it from scuffing up the screen. It does increase glare but it also decreases fingerprints and Pencil-induced scratches.

I'm not a fan of screen protectors - on both my iPad and iPhone. I am always wiping down both though with microfiber clothes, especially if I'm watching Netflix on my iPad.

I have the original 12.9 in iPadPro and it's going on three years old. I've used it daily in challenging environments: university studio classes, my studio with concrete floors, my house with cats. I also have the Apple Pencil. Like others, I protect it with an Apple Smart Keyboard. My screen still looks like new.

(And, speaking for myself, I'd never put a screen protector on this device because I value having all of the "tactility" of the screen available to me.)

What I ALSO have and what's essential to me is an Apple silicone back cover that matches the Smart Keyboard. That back cover makes the iPad less slithery and also has corner protection for drops. And yes, I've dropped it many times. :( What I don't understand is why Apple stopped offering this!

I really liked those too, and I can only guess that they just weren’t selling all that well, OR they’d rather you buy a leather sleeve.

10.5 since the day it came out. Never used a glass protector. Actually never used a glass protector on any of my iPhone either.

The glass is difficult, but not impossible to scratch. I use an UAG case and have yet to get a scratch.
The protectors I've seen used look great at first, but slowly degrade in quality over time, making the display difficult to read. The glare on the glass / plastic protectors is too much for me as well. I use my iPad continually for application development. I usually get the next best thing the moment it comes out, I have an iPad 2018, but continue to use the 10.5 iPP. That may bias my understanding of scratch resistance.

I've had tempered glass screen protector since shortly after 10. 5 Purchase.
Sensible decision, very non intrusive.
Safe in the knowlegde my ipad isn't been splattered with Tea or Ice Cream etc.

I never Have used any screen protectors on my iPad. I prefer the portfolio cases where they have a soft felt lining, which simply covers up the display to prevent any accidents or scratches. To me, I think I enjoy using the iPad display just the way it came from the factory, and I find to be durable enough without a protector, but I’m also very cautious with my devices and I clean the displays regularly.

Currently using a matte tempered glass screen protector on my 12.9 IPP. It took a while for me to get used to the image quality hit (reminiscent of looking through fog lol) but I love the feel and resistance to fingerprints. I nearly took it off the day after I installed it but stuck it out and am glad I did. No doubt in my mind that image quality is affected but I’ve seen iPads out in the wild including my wife’s that have blotches in their screen coatings from wear and tear despite having always had smart covers on them. I figure I’ll keep this on until I tire of it and when I remove it my display will be pristine still.

Yes. I like being able to quickly remove smudges etc. But also protection against physical damage. My ipad 2 was under my car seat when someone kneeled on the seat. A metal seat support smashed the protector but the screen was not damaged.

I now have a JETech protcotor from Amazon which was very inexpensive, about 10euro.

I used to use screen protectors on all of my devices. I thought they were always necessary to avoid scratches. Then I had a child. When he was little older, I would let him watch videos on my original iPad Mini. At some point, he ripped the screen protector off. He is 7 now and still drags that thing all over, not a single scratch on the screen. After I saw that, I never bothered putting screen protectors on any of my devices, I doubt I could scratch them with my normal use.

I don't have a glass screen protector but I do use matte protectors on my iPads. They help cut down on the fingerprint smudges and glare. They even help a bit on my 2018 iPad and 12.9 iPad Pro when using the Pencil... just a little resistance to help improve the experience.

Do you have a brand recommendation?

There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for the pricing on these matte screen protectors when comparing them to their quality. One of the better looking ones happens to be one of the cheapest.

The brand that I've settled on, Mr. Shield, has been consistently of good quality for all of my devices... 12.9 iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, 2018, iPad, Lenovo Yoga Book, (and just yesterday) LG Stylo 3 smartphone. For under $10 USD, I get 5 protectors, and all of the accompanying accessories for trouble-free application. With other screen protectors, I was never able to get a perfect application... bubbles, dust, etc. But with Mr. Shield's packages, perfect... every time. It was quite a surprise when my first use of Mr. Shield, was on the massive 12.9 Pro. I thought for sure that would be impossible to apply perfectly. Boom. First time, perfect. (On every device after that, a perfect application on the first attempt)

I use both my iPads mostly outdoors in sunlight; a matte screen makes a big difference in reducing glare. In my use it increases visibility as well as your stated smudge/ fingerprint reduction.

I have never noticed much quality different between the different brands, but I did notice that the ZAGG HD one I just put on my iPad went on perfectly and effortlessly with limited bubbles to press out and virtually no debris. I don’t think the quality varies much from one to the next, but this one seems a tad nicer.

I've never used a screen protector on any of the iPads I've owned. It's just too irritating to me and I prefer to not put one on. If you're careful while using it and you have a decent case or cover on while transporting it or while traveling you have nothing to worry about. If you throw it case-free into a bag of pins, bolts and hammers and are not careful with it then of course don't expect it to stay in mint condition for long :)

I run an edge to edge glass protector on my iPhone but on my iPad, I don’t want the extra bulk of glass, so I use a film protector. Right now I have an anti-glare iCarez on my iPad 9.7 Pro. I like the anti glare properties and also the feel of the Pencil on it. However, I don’t like the reduction in clarity. I’ve tried other anti-glare protectors including Power Support and have yet to find one that keeps the clarity.

Up until a week ago, I used my Pro with just a matte skin on the back and screen protector on the front. This worked great for me and I would carry the iPad, ASK and Pencil in a pouch for protection. After over a year, the edge of the back skin started to peel up. I pulled it off and although I loved the skin, I knew there was no way to get another perfect install of a new skin so now I have the Power Support Air Jacket on the back.

While others get by with no screen protection, I can’t do it. As careful as I am, I always get scratches on my screens without protectors. My current iPad Pro would have had a good scratch from the Pencil if I didn’t have a protector. I must have gotten a speck of dirt on either the Pencil tip or screen protector - had drag with a serious scratch to the protector. Thankful I had the protector on.

When I first started out, I didn't have any screen protector. I coddled my 9.7" iPP and had a Smart Keyboard cover on it. Was very careful about putting it in its special pocket in my backpack and using only a clean microfiber cloth to wipe it off. Guess what? It got scratches on the screen. No matter what you do, I guarantee you'll have scratches a year in. So when I got a replacement iPad after software issues, I put a tempered glass screen protector right on that baby out of the box. Quite frankly I love it. The oleophobic coating on the protector makes it really nice and smooth and not a fingerprint magnet like the screen without it. Whenever it gets a little bit worn down and fingerprinty, I just buy a new one for 9 bucks. The Apple Pencil still works perfectly. Most importantly, the screen underneath is in factory condition. Don't listen to the people saying not to get one. The reasons not to are really pretty flimsy.
