I have to say I used the folders, but I didn't like them that much. I thought that they looked tacky, so now I have a page according to each type of app.

Almost pure folders on most of my screens. Otherwise there's just so many pages I can't find anything and the screen gets worn out from too much scrolling around! 
Too many apps.
And yeah, nested folders. Or at least bigger, scrollable folders. I have 3 folders for games, and still I have to delete old ones when I get a new one to fit them in. I guess it helps keep it tidy.

Folders have icons too tiny to recognize at a glance. Yet theyre great for organizing...
Solution: Take ONE typical or most-common app out of the folder and place it in the slot right above the folder. Its like the icon for the folder. If you do this with all your folders, navigation is easy.
You can either do two rows per page: icons over folders, then icons over folders again. (One folder and one poster app per category = 13 total.) Or just one row: icons across the top, and THREE folders below each, like Utilities 1, Utilities 2, Utilities 3. (Thats 37 apps per category in that case.)
I also like to use Emoji in folder names.

The second page has only categorized folders of non-gaming apps.
The third page has folders of gaming apps, categorized by game genre (e.g., Role Playing).
