Do you recommend a wireless router?

Hey everyone, I want a wireless G router what would work well with my Macs, let's exclude the Airport Extreme, costs too much and I am sure there is a router out there that should work flawlessly...who here has an intel Mac and can get download speeds of 5mbps+ on their router, and what brand is it? I have had Linksys for the past 2 years, it needs resetting once in a while, I want something that will be solid and need very little maintenance, like an Apple product! but not an Airport Extreme :D

edit: I can go for the Airport extreme, but maybe I don't see it, what value do I get out of it? to the ones who own one.
 
Well, I have a D-Link Dl-524 hooked up to my Intel Mac Mini, and I haven't noticed any speed problems. It worked fine with my Powerbook wirelessly, too, though I haven't tried the wireless on the Intel Mini to see if it's affected.

It's stable as a rock, though, and I haven't ever had any problems with it. Had it about a year now. Very cheap, if you can grab 'em on sale at Best Buy.
 
I have a DLINK of some sort (I can't remember the model no) and it works great. I think wireless is the best invention EVER. I just love being able to go anywhere in my house/uni/other hotspot locations and be able to be on the net.
 
ive got the Airport Extreme but if i could go back I'd get the SRX400 by linksys

I've installed it at several client's houses...very awesome
 
I use a Netgear MR814v2. I think they go for really really cheap nowadays (got mine on eBay last year for <$20). It works wonderfully but I've heard that's it's almost a 50/50 chance. I've never had a problem with it, though.

how is it superior, is it in terms of reliability or features? I currently have a Linksys, and I'm not 100% happy with it, it's a Wireless B and I'm going to Wireless G, and I want to install a wireless router I can just forget about...livingfortoday and max_altitude, this is within my price range, what do you guys think? My cousin works at my local best buy, I can probably get it for 50, but is this a good choice you think?

I just spend the better part of the weekend struggling with a Linksys WRT54G v5, which I just reset for the fourth time in the afternoon...
I've had and setup several, from v1 to v4, and they've always worked flawlessly, but the latest version is really, really, REALLY bad... :mad:

So, my recommendation right now would be to stay away from the Linksys, and get an Airpot Express - I have one that I take with me when I travel, and it works great :)
 
I've got a Linksys WRT54GS (v5 I think). This is my first experience with a wireless setup. It was a bit tough to get it all sorted properly, seeing as how 1) I'm still learning all the ins and outs of it all and 2) there isn't any Mac documentation or software for it. I will say it's worked wonderfully once I got it going; 99% of the time I have 4 bars of coverage everywhere in the house and out on the back porch.
 
i have netgear's (falsely-advertised) double 108. if i had the money, i'd buy that new netgear 240. it has rangemax and capable of (pc, so far) xfering 240mbps, the claimed speed for a wired. i'm just waiting for a USB adapter for the 240 so that i can test it in the mac.
 
I have a Linksys WRT54GV4 running Open-WRT firmware.

I strongly recommend this router. If you can't find an older one (V1-V4) get the WRT54GL and run one of the plethora of third-party firmwares out there that add significant functionality.

I have a Belkin Pre-N router and it has been solid since the day I bought it. At least 10GB of traffic goes through this router on a daily basis in a mixed network with Apple machines, Windows Machines and Linux machines.

i second this - have had no probs whatsoever with pc's.. waiting to try on my iMac in a few hours time.. should be fine tho..
my version is 2.02 or something like that.. have never upgraded firmware on it.
 
Hi, i have a Netgear wireless adsl firewall router, model number DG384G which has always been stable, and as an extra bonus, is quite nicely designed so doesn't look like some ugly computer that is on show

I second this. I have one too, no problems (they are providing firmware updates regularly, too). I even bought one of their newer models for my parents, no problems either.
