IMO Xbox is one of the biggest money making products for Microsoft. I can't tell you how many people I know who won't use windows but one an Xbox. Any way Apple has never been on the gaming side of things and with ios I think in there minds they have it covered just saying. And if apple were to make something I think the price would be so high that real gamers would never buy it. It's like the ps3 vs Xbox argument. The Xbox is cheaper and sells more but the ps3 had better graphics and a built in blu-ray player and coast a bit more. But the cost difference could be agued about more features. Then on the flip side people tend to like Xbox live more then the psn so like I said I think it comes back to you pay for what you get. And if apple ever got into the market I know it would be awesome but with a price tag. And a lot of gamers want cheap IMO.

Not even close. The Xbox division only became profitable a couple years ago. Until then they’d been losing tons of money since the first Xbox came out. Pretty much every Microsoft venture that isn’t the Windows desktop/server OS or Office is subsidized by the huge earnings from those two products.

Anyway, back on topic: if Apple does wind up in the living room gaming space, it’ll be because third-party devs are able to develop apps for either the current or a future Apple TV. That still leaves the “controller” problem, but who knows? In any case, I’d picture them competing more with Nintendo in that space, not with Microsoft or Sony in the “hardcore” gamer space.

Whoa, whoa! Let's not get crazy here, we won't see those kinda specs for years!

Apple do not need to sell a console, they already have the Apple TV. The next OS X will have screen mirroring to the Apple TV so between all your Mac and iOS games that will be playable on it, you do not need an Apple console.

I think they might do that eventually. In a new way to offer something that is not found today in consoles. Eventhough Kinect, WiiU have raised the bar I am sure they will find a way to provide something new.

Maybe they ll make better use of the screen mirroring and provide games that can be played on a tv from iOS devices with multiplayer both online and locally.

It could be called the iGame or something like that. Do you think that would be successful?

They have been there and done that...

the fact you were probably unaware speaks as testament to the success it had.

Most likely way they will compete is if their iOS devices continue to increase power year by year, and the way they hook up via AirPlay and HDMI to your TV already..

If the rumours of a TV set or collaboration to incorporate iOS in other TV's comes to fruition, then again it'll be just an extension of your iOS mobile device to the TV via AirPlay etc..

But specific stand-alone Gaming device. Highly unlikely....

Are those the specs of the Pippin? :p

They failed with the Pippin and considering they're not big on gaming except for the iOS stuff they're not likely to try again. In any case I don't think they could successfully compete against Microsoft. Sony and Nintendo.

Doubt it, its too big of a risk with little reward. They are way behind the Microsoft and they would have to secure game studios. I think they will stick with ios as their gaming platform

Xbox in its current form and even more so in the next generation is making a huge move to entrench itself as a living room entertainment all-in-one device, so Apple better have something amazing up its sleeve to even have a hope of accomplishing such a feat. Given Apple's terrible past performance and real lack of initiative in this realm, I would say it's highly unlikely.

With phones and iPads true that there are some good games but I doubt people buy them solely as gaming machines.

A console is a gaming machine, that's all it does. If there are no games then it won't sell no matter how good the hardware is.

Apple do not know how to make games and don't care, hence the sorry state of OSX gaming so can't see Apple getting into this market.

Why make or buy something dedicated to gaming and gaming only, when you can buy something that can do that and a whole lot more? Seems like making a gaming machine would be a step down from where they are right now. There will be a time in the future where your kids will laugh at you thinking you ever had a machine to hook into a TV just for games that couldnt do more.

Discounting Android, are not IOS devices already the worldwide leader in "game consoles"? (Leaving PCs out of it). I ride a lot of public transportation and from my informal survey, I think Apple already has their "console".
