Will Apple make iPad Pros Bezeless give them Face ID in 2018?

  • Absolutely, no question or doubt about it!

  • No, there won’t be any awesome iPad updates anytime soon.

  • Wait... what’s the question again?

  • Apple will reduce 12.9” side bezels and add haptic home buttons.

  • Wait until 10-year anniversary.

  • Nothing at all.

I really, really want all the current rumors about the next iPPs to be true, but it just seems unlikely due to their change in update cycles for iPads. Plus if they were to do any re-designs this year, what special thing would they do for the 10-year anniversary of the iPad... (OLED, Face ID 2, 3D Touch, Apple Pencil 2 in more colors, a more computer-like OS???)

But what do you all think, will 2018 be the year we do actually get fully re-designed iPads withought big bezels and a more stable and better iOS 11/12, to really compete with the surface pro’s?

Or

Do you think 2018 will just be a year of iPhone 9, MacBooks, MacPro, EarPods, and iMac refreshes? Then for software just maybe they improve iOS 11... but call it iOS 12 (just to make it sound/look flashier,) but no real major or cool features since Apple said they are planning to just improve iOS and Mac OS, and hold off on doing anything major.

***I’m just curious what everyone really thinks Apple will most likely do, (I’m not trying to do a wishlist thread, I’m curious about everyone’s more realistic guesses/opinions) but feel free to drop some ideas. :)

Kallum.

Rumors has it that a FaceID version will be outed this fall. It is only rumor but have heard it several times. I would love a new 10.5 with smaller bezels. FaceID would need to work in landscape mode.

I would be extremely surprised if Apple didn’t make iPhone X style changes, ie less bezels, the notch, Face ID, in this years iPad models.

I'm thinking yes, but probably with side bezels similar to the current 10.5 and slimmer (but still not as slim as the sides) top and bottom bezels with Face ID in the bezel and not a notch. Maybe that's wishful thinking though...

I think a lot of people are forgetting about the Smart Keyboard variable. For example if Apple were to greatly reduce the bezels on the 10.5 Pro , then the Smart Keyboard would be even smaller than the 9.7 version. This seems counter to the key selling points of an iPad being a computer replacement. Unless they further increase the screensize of the smaller iPad but this seems unlikely since that just happened.

The only way for this not to be an issue is to reduce the bezels on the 12.9 since the Keyboard has plenty of breathing room on the sides. This reduction would also bring the larger iPad down to around 1-1.2 pounds instead of the current 1.5 pounds.

Also there is the issue of Face ID recognizing faces from various angles they way an iPad is held. Which I’m sure they’ll figure out by later this year.

Good question. Honestly, I’d hate to buy a new cover and keyboard if they change the physical size for a third time. But I also think a lot of developers are going to be fed up with changing the resultion of their apps for a third time if Apple fills out the screen... even though I’d preferred the second. The 10.5 keyboard cramped enough as it is, imagine reducing it again. The 12.9 is the only device benefiting from scaling down the device. I’d rather have them keep the physical size but stretch out the screen, so we’ll have a longer view in landscape mode. That’ll be so amazing for multitasking. But for the love of God, don’t shrink the already thin bezels on top and bottom in landscape!!

Very hard to tell with Apple, the good thing for my checking account is that I’d only seriously consider upgrading when an OLED model comes out. Until that point I am extremely happy with my first generation IPP.

I’m very curious to see what they do this year. I’ve been wondering for the past year or more about when an iPad redesign would arrive. The current aluminum, rounded corners + chamfered edges has been used since 2012 (iPad mini, iPod touch & partially iPhone 5). Been 5-6 years with this design. It’s not that it’s a bad design, or that it should change for the sake of change, but curious nonetheless as to where Apple will go with iPad design.

Pretty decent rumours talking about Face ID coming to iPad this year. Whether that means the iPhone X type of design with OLED and a screen curved to the corners of the device, or if it just means similar current iPad with LCD but adding Face ID (and maybe shrinking the bezels and dropping the home button), I’d guess the latter. Mainly because it took until late 2017 to get ample supply for OLED displays with the quality they like for iPhones, I can’t see significant ramp up to satisfy multiple iPhone sizes in late 2018 plus large iPad screens as well.

I must say though, somehow the OLED iPhone screen makes these LCD screens feel old. I think from them being rectangular and also with OLED somehow looking like it’s painted right on the surface of the glass. An iPad ‘X’ (for lack of better name) with a stainless steel body and OLED screen curved to the edges would be absolutely incredible.

My final guess: I think we’ll see an updated iPad design this year, with smaller bezels, no home button, Face ID but still LCD.

People like Ming Chi Kuo have predicted that 2018 iPad Pro will have a Face If but I wonder people like him have taken into consideration if technically is it feasible or not, especially nobody seems to have a clue ? I dont if Apple has it even ? That how i it gonna make the Face Id work in Landscape Mode on the iPad ? Big...Big question to be answered ? I wonder if it is just a loose talk by people like Kuo !

I've got the money sitting here waiting to buy an iPad Pro but I know as soon as I do they'll announce a new one so I'm *trying* to wait, but it's not easy and I'm not sure I could hold out until the end of the year, I was hoping it would be March(ish) :-(

Idk how I'd feel about the bezels on the iPad getting any smaller than they already are. I recently got the 10.5 and They are already pretty narrow on the sides. I feel like if they follow the iPhone X direction, it would literally be awkward to grab the iPad on the side. I also am staunchly against FaceID - it just does not work for me and I prefer TouchID. I tried the X and went back to 8 Plus after a week of giving it second and third chances. I just don't find it convenient enough for things like Apple Pay. Having to face the phone to unlock it just feels counter intuitive to me - placing your finger on the home button is much more user friendly (personal preference)

I guess you will have to change yourself or get used to the changing trends in technology ! Face Id does look a imminent thing in the near future !

I’m the opposite. FaceId works brilliantly for me and I simply can’t see myself going back to touch and home button. Now that seems counterintuitive and archaic. I don’t even think of authentication anymore it simply works and is absolutely seamless. My workflow is so much faster this way.

Admittedly I don’t use Apple Pay. Didn’t have a chance to try it before either with touchid so I don’t even have a comparison point. Everything else , faceid is the way to go. Pick up the phone and just use it knowing it’s completely secure. Get the OS and authentication out of the way.

How about you do buy one tomorrow then? Take one for the team. When the new one is released two weeks later, sell yours and all of us waiting will chip in a buck each to cover your loss.

You’ll be the MR hero!

Just an interesting observation. My local Best Buy has been pretty much out of stock on the iPad 10.5 models for a couple of weeks now. It'd be interesting if other local stores in other areas have the same issue. They have three models of the iPad 12.9, and received new shipments of those, but even those models have lower selection than usual.

I don’t think local Bestbuy stock level is any indicator of pending product refresh. Apple usually stock up their Apple store first then rest stock going to third party reseller.

If anything, if lots of Apple store starting showing low stock and not restocking as fast as before, then I would think there is pending product refresh.

I would think the 9.7inch iPad would get refresh first then iPad Pro later this year.

NO FRIGGING WAY!

Ipad Pro gets the X treatment. question is whether they update the 10.5, the 12.9, both , one or none. I see an internal update to the 10.5 and 12.9 with a new model line. iPhone X style .10.5 chassis edge to edge with a 11.5 screen..

9.7? where did you get that from? It's not logical, that's the entry level ipad and matches up with none of the rumors so far.

Poster only said refresh, not that it would be given the X treatment. The 9.7 iPad was released March 2017 so quite possible the 2018 refresh (likely same chassis, display, etc, spec-bumped to maybe Apple A10) would be released March 2018 with the Pro models getting updated later in the year.

having just bout a 10.5 inch this month (to replace the 12.9 inch 2017 pro i foolishly had to sell), im hoping they put out a iphone x style version this year...IN SEPTEMBER..... JUNE at the earliest with WWDC as then the current crop of pros will be a year old, but believe me i got no issue in the slightest waiting until september along with the new line of phones.

As for OLED...rather doubt it. hopefully there is no notch and just a thin besal around it for the notch and no home button. i barely use the home button as is outside of touch id and when i have to.

Hopefully they also put out a new pencil, this one with an eraser and wireless charging!

Don't all OLED displays have pwm? Is it really a good idea to change the screen? Not good if a display is going to cause eyestrain for those users who have sensitive eyes.
