I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 15"

2.6/16/256/hexa-core

Do I need to upgrade? It's been a full 5 years.

How can others know if you need to upgrade? Only you can know. But if I were you I wouldn't upgrade because M3 already got a successor, the M4. And by the time the MacBook line gets the M4 this is already old and M5 is around the corner. Perhaps M5 get's next gen NPU with 32 cores.

Sorry for the confusion. My needs include numbers, external monitor displays, web browsing, live data feeds, live video. YouTube. That’s about it

Depends, my reference being the 2019 i9 MBP that I gave to my mother as soon as I could get my hands on an Apple Sillicon.

All things considered, were it not for the for the NON TRIVIAL gains in battery life (being highly mobile, that was a game changer), I'd have kept the device until now and would feel no need to upgrade for my use-case either.

I expect the device to get at least 4-5 years in the field. There's an upper-bound to the compute we need in this form factor and given that what most (and you, from the description) do is browse web-apps, there's no need for more. The unified memory present in the AS architecture allows for some tinkering with locally hosted LLMs and given that more and more of those functions will start and get baked into the OS, I'd expect the upgrade to become more compelling soon. That being said, I'd wait for M4.

As said above, the fact that you need to ask (as opposed to having that glaring flaw drive an obsession to dispose of the device) seems to point to a set reality.

I still can't wrap my head around 2019 being 5 years ago

Ok great. Thank you all. I will wait for future models and see then since right now I’m OK. I am excited to see what new features are in store for the future. Right now, I do not see much benefit just from the surface. No Touch Bar, thicker, heavier, notch. It’s not a big deal, but if I do not need to upgrade then these are a few gripes I have. Maybe future models will improve on this and offer some new and exciting things
