why not just have a macbook air without keyboard and have it with touch,i would have paid wot the air was cause it would have been a full computer, plus they could have made it to run iphone apps for mobility, simple. people would have forkt out for that

a) Price.
b) Unsuitability of OS user interface.
If the iPad had all the things that everyone cries for -- USB, flash, camera, multitasking, etc. -- than, it could might as well replace MacBook for some people. Right or wrong, perhaps Steve Jobs was afraid of that scary potential.
i think they did it intentionally just to milk the product line and to provide an upgrade path, until they integrate OSX (the next version) ecosystem, then merge the macbook with this device. (my guess)Maybe. The man knows how to squeeze products for all their worth. Letting available technology out in a slow trickle (so people will be inspired to buy the next revision! Yay for greed... sorry, business!) and charging for adapters for the rest they decided not to include.
I think it's a slick piece of kit and that's awesome if it's the right thing for some. For me it is missing too many crucial things. USB port, a camera, GPS, multitasking, flash support, ability to put a new browser on it, etc. I think the screen resolution may be a little low as well. It's just not FOR ME. Maybe it will be in a revision or two. We'll see.
