So, the m1 looks awfully like an a14x. So let's speculate here. Do you think that the a14x will be as fast as the m1? or do you think that it will be downclocked due to thermal limitiations or maybe binned m1s? Do you think the a14x is basically the same as the m1 and it will have the same performance? And do you think it will get the 7 core or 8 core gpu?

I‘m not certain that there will be an A14X. The next iPad Pro might have the same A12Z.
People will dislike that opinion, likely the same people that disliked when I said they had already had the 2020 16” MBP update.
I can’t help but wonder what people want their iPad Pro to do that a 2020 iPadPro can’t...

M1 has an extended CPU cache size comparing to A14, I doubt rumored "A14x" would also have its cache extended.
For a Soc, there is much more about CPU and GPU. The IO might be cut down to reduce the size of the chip so that it will fit in an iPad.
it's not that the 2020 iPad Pro is incapable in any way, but advertising a new chip that's x% faster with y% faster graphics is part of the sales pitch.
There's already the iPad Air with A14, so surely the next iPP will have a kind of A14X. I guess it will be very similar to M1, without Mac specific features, and maybe a bit underclocked.
Anyway... even my iPad Pro (2nd gen 2017) is pretty fast. The problems are the small amount of RAM (even 6GB is small), and the need of better external monitor integration.

I think it will have the same performance as it currently does. The iPads already had this architecture and SoC. They will throw in some BS out more trillions of processes going through the Neural engine or something like that.
I have a Gen 3 Air and wife has Pro, I'm too dump to see any performance differences, her battery doesn't last as long.

It makes sense that the 2021 iPad Pro will have A14X which will be very similar to the M1. No way it will have A12Z when the iPad Air has A14. The 2020 iPad Pro looks like a stop-gap update, a bit like an S iPhone year.

The iPad Pro is already so good, that it is difficult to see what more can Apple improve with hardware, although I would love them to add a 15” screen version.

But the software needs lots of improvements. The iPad OS at it current state make me think Apple does not want to make iPad "too powerful", so they intentionally limit the potential of the device by setting software limitations.
I think Apple have got a difficult balancing act with iPadOS. Many uses on this forum want professional software, but one of the beauties of the iPad is its simplicity to use. Therefore Apple do not want to alienate the majority of users, just to please a small number with more demanding requirements. Personally I think the iPad could do with a switch in the settings for professional mode. The majority would never use, but us who wish to use as a MacBook replacement can switch on
I think another A12Z iPad Pro is very unlikely. The cheaper iPad Air has an A14, the next iPad Pro is likely to have an A14X.
The best of both worlds would be charging customers to order an 'unlocked' iPad, which MacOS can be installed on.
I certainly look forward to the “2021” iPad Pro. My 2018 iPad Pro is so fast, I can’t even imagine what the performance of the next generation will do.
I don't think is will be a good idea. macOS and most of its apps have very terrible support for touch inputs, and you will not be happy with the user experience, just like the terrible experience of using iOS apps on macOS. We need powerful enough native apps, not the ones that are not even designed for the platform.
NO, the thermal headroom of the MacBook Air and Pro, and the cooling will be greater than the iPad Pro due to size and weight differences. It will have, my guess, 20% less initial performance, and also throttle much lower over time. They just simply can't put a beefy aluminum or copper heatsink with active or passive cooling in the iPad.
