The quality of youtube over EDGE or 3G is currently completely unwatchable.

And on a screen that is larger like the ipad, this lack of quality will be all the more noticable.

So I think youtube over 3G on the ipad will be greatly improved, because, well, it has to be really.

Do you think this will then filter down onto the iphone?

No. Crappy video quality on a small screen is crappier on a bigger screen if. The resolution of the video is the limiting factor.

The quality of streamed video from youtube over 3G/edge is set by the software and many JB'ers circumvent this by using a 3G unrestrictor. It wouldn't be a challenge to (and probably will) be changed for the larger screen of the ipad

I know this.

I am wondering if and when the youtube quality over 3G for the ipad is improved, will this also happen on the iphone?

Through a software update.

I dont see why not, if its over the same network

I think it's extemely unlikely it will. It'll just look awful on an iPad.

The networks would gleefully block 3G/Edge access to YouTube if they could already, they certainly aren't going to allow anything that would increase that data flow down their already melting networks.

Resolution? Have you even been to Youtube in the last 2 years? You can put 1920x1080 files on there now. How could resolution possibly be the problem?

No, he's clearly talking about the limit AT&T puts on Youtube on their network. You can watch a video on iPhone wifi and it looks great and then watch it on 3G and it looks terrible.

He's simply asking if we'll ever get the Wifi version of the video over 3G.

Sprint does it. My friend's Pre YouTube looks the same on the cell network as my iPhone does on Wifi.

It's a good question. I suspect the iPad will get the higher quality version.* Whether or not that means the iPhones will...I dunno. I kind of guess 'no' but you never know!

* And by 'higher quality' I mean their higher quality cell-phone version. The iPad is still not going to play the full HD file or anything like that, even over Wifi. Decoding that would really rip through the battery.

"I'm going to pick a clip called "Wet and Woofy", that I know is in high-def on YouTube..."
No doubt that was on Wi-Fi, so all's good there. I'm pretty sure we'll get the 360p or 480p version over 3G at best, which would be acceptable.

Crappier. Imagine the overload of AT&T's network when the 3G/S came out. Now you have a device that can access the network without requiring the user to switch carriers.
