I would like to know that too! I want one now, but I don’t need one, so I could wait until MacWorld, but if they don’t get an update until next summer I don’t want to wait . . .

Is it very unlikely that it will be updated with stuff like Penryn and Blue Ray in the next 6 month?

I guess nobody knows for sure, but what do you guys think? :confused:

Searching is your friend. There are multiple topics per week on this exact subject.

Last two years it was updated in october, but I really hope it isn't, I hope for jan or something because I ordered mine today and whole have had the same rabatt until 27th oct.

Penryn is supposed to be coming out Q4 '07, or Q1 '08. Apple will more than likely upgrade to the processor relatively soon after Intel's release.

Actually, last year it was updated in November. The year before that (2005) was the initial release of the MacBook, so it only saw one revision that year (July).

In 2004, the iBook was updated twice, in April, and in October.

Discounting 2004 to the release in 2005, (Intel transition), it appears Apple likes a April/May and October/November release for new iBook/MacBook.

I'd say if Apple does have hardware available in November, it probably would like to upgrade it sometime around then, especially to go with the release of Leopard in late October.

I forsee Apple's ideal plan to be to release new MBP and MP at the same time as Leopard, and then probably have a MB upgrade trickle in later.

I doubt Apple will upgrade the MBP again this year; it already has the latest tech for notebooks (LED, Santa Rosa, good GPU). The Macbook definitely needs an upgrade and so do the Mac Pros. The MBPs most likely will be updated during Macworld '08 with hopefully a new chassis and bumped up specs.

A little off topic, but kinda pertinent to MBP's. If they do update the dvd drives to Blu-ray, do ya'll think there will be an upgrade option to replace the 8x super drives in the current MBP's? I'm not to familiar with the functionality of Blu-Ray drives regarding their need for higher bandwidth to the logic board. I have a home blu-ray player and some movies, and upgrading the drive in my soon to be purchased MBP would be nice for trips, etc.

Thanks for your opinions,

Scott :D

btw, I'm soon to be an ex-pc dude. I love my wife's MBP and I'm hooked!

Your information is all wrong.

The iBook was last updated in July 2005. Then the first model of the Macbook was released in May 2006. It was updated to Core 2 Duo in November 2006, and then got a minor revision in May 2007.

This puts it on track for a revision to Santa Rosa and LED screens in November 2007.

Macbook Pros have had a different update cycle (Jan 06 - April 06(17'' introduction) - October 06 - June 07) However, since they are still using the latest tech and will be until the Penryn release in early 2008, they won't see an update until then. (Last year they were updated in October to Core 2 Duo since it had recently been released)

Yeah, I doubt Apple will update for another gpu so next update will probably be with next cpu tech as earlier. Do you have a "correct" estimate on when penryn will be released?

From what I heard it might be desktop penryn in late q4 07-q1 08 (dec-jan) and mobile penryn in early q1 08 (jan-feb).

I think the consensus among most members it the next MBP update will be at MWSF 08. Personally I think it will be a few weeks after that (maybe like the first week of February) with just a regular refresh on the website like the last two revisions.

But the MBP update all depends on when Intel starts full production and shipping of the Mobile Penryn chips.

The MB update is completely different because the technology that will be in the next update is already available. It just depends on when Apple wants to update it. Personally I'm thinking around November with SR and LED for three reasons.

1. The first LED screen rumor said 15.4'' ordered for Q2 (June MBPs) and 13.3'' for Q3 (Macbooks).
2. MB introduced May 06, revised November 06 and May 07. See a pattern?
3. Christmas buying season.

Agree with all except your mbp update time estimate. I think that the mbp will also see an update before Christmas. It would be bad if the upper end notebook line wasn't updated before the most crucial season for every retailer.

What are they going to update it too? It already has top of the line everything.

I think they are probably going to release the 17" with LED sometime soon, possibly before years end. I would hope it were to be released with Leopard. :)

I'm not sure, and that worries me! However, I do see that Apple has settled into a trend with their notebook lines (both of them) and they seem to have a six month refresh cycle. Maybe a small speed bumb and more RAM or something, but the mbp will see an update before Christmas.

I'm sorry I'm new, what is Santa Rosa?? I keep hearing about it

Santa Rosa is Intel's codename for their latest batch of notebook processors. They have a higher FSB speed, and other good features as well. Here's a link so you can read up on it a little.

Sorry, I meant the Pro, the regular macbook was updated a little earlier and I would assume that they would had prefered to get the next generation cpus within the pros first. So I guess macbook might see an updated before penryn and pro after.

Conroe = Core Single/Duo, first gen "core" CPUs. 32 bit, 667mhz fsb, 90nm?
Merom = Core 2 Duo, second gen. 64bit, 667mhz fsb, 65nm?
Santa Rosa = Core 2 Duo, third gen. 64bit, 800mhz fsb, 65nm?
Penryn = Core whatever Duo/Quad(?), fourth gen. 64bit, .. ? die shrinkage I think, from 65 to 45nm, or?
