I think you'd lose a lot of power by running Leopard over SL, since the machine was designed to take advantage of SL features.

Or just Snow Leopard?

Speaking technicaly, 10.5.6 restore dvd from 2009macpro has support for hd4850 and nehalem-generation cpus.

so, maybe that install disk, or 10.5.7/10.5.8 would work.

yea I can confirm that no mac will run an OS older than the one it was shipped with (other than the small point updates), and using another computer's OS install disk wont work either.

The reason I asked is this. My father is thinking of buying an iMac, but he's still using Macromedia Freehand, which apparently doesn't work well on SL, but works somehow ok on Leopard still. So if he can't install Leopard on new iMacs, he'll just have to buy the current 24" one.

Which is a shame really.
