The last rumor still points to mini-LEDs for the upcoming 14 & 16" MBPs.

What do you think? Will we actually see the mini-LED and 120hz for MBPs in 2021?

To me, it makes sense that Macbook Pros should have XDR displays because they are "Pro" and they cost much more than the iPad Pro which now has mini-LED and 120hz.

However, I could see a world where Apple holds off on the display upgrades for 2022 because they want to stagger major features for sales reasons. So 2021's biggest selling point will be a new chassis redesign, more ports coming back, and Apple Silicon. 2022 will be XDR displays.

I would jizz if the 2021 16" MBP comes with Apple Silicon based on A15 on 5nm+, more ports, mini-LED, 120hz, and no touchbar.

A true successor to the 2015 Macbook Pro 15".

No, since I don’t see how they could ship enough of miniLED displays at this time. I could see an XDR display as an BTO update for +$600

Has Apple ever done an upgradeable display for Macbooks?

Do we know what the sales volume is for the iPad Pro 13" vs sales volume for Macbook Pro 16"?

For example, if Apple sells 15m iPad Pro 13" per year, and 10m Macbook Pro 16" per year, is volume really an issue?

It just seems weird that the XDR is standard on a $1100 iPad Pro but not on a $2500 Macbook Pro.

There were upgradeable displays for PowerBooks back in the day. IIRC, they were quite pricey.

Interesting.

Unless Apple lowers the base price of the Macbook Pro 16" by $600, I have a hard time seeing Apple give the $1100 iPad Pro 13" an XDR 120Hz display standard but tells Macbook Pro 16" users that they have to spend $600 to get the same quality.

They did if I remember correctly. There were higher resolution panel options and also finish options.

Good question. All I can say is that the iPad revenue is practically identical to the Mac revenue, so iPads probably outsell the Macs by a large margin. It would surprise me though if the 12.9" sells too many units, it's a fairly exclusive tablet.

For example, if Apple sells 15m iPad Pro 13" per year, and 10m Macbook Pro 16" per year, is volume really an issue?

I completely agree that it is weird, it's also weird to have the 120ghz display on the iPad Pro and not on the MacBook Pro, but there are limitations to the display technology. For example, the larger the display the more difficult it is to make it (the chance of failure depends on the area of the panel). Besides, the thickness of the iPad makes it easier to utilize new display technology (and Apple had to increase it this year to accommodate miniLED design!)

In the end, MiniLEDs of that size, quality and energy consumption are a very recent, not yet mature technology. Given that Apple is having difficulty to source enough of them for a 13" high-end tablet (currently at 6 weeks waiting time), I just don't see how they are supposed to supply a sufficient numbers of laptop displays...

Right on cue: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/05/31/mini-led-macbook-pro-third-quarter-shipments/

Seems like reports are still pointing to mini LED for the upcoming MBPs. Hope it's true.
Now that @leman mentions it, it seems possible that Apple would make the mini-LED version a build to order option. This would allow shipments of the new MacBook Pro in early July and allow them to push out the mini-LED version until late July or early August.

Starting to ship the display to manufacturing in the third quarter doesn’t leave much room for Apple to release new products announced at WWDC in the second week of June.

July is technically the third quarter.

It seems unlike Apple to make the display upgradeable. If they're not ready, I think they will just push the change to next year.

Again, I think the backlash would be too great if the $1100 iPad Pro 13" comes with a mini-LED 120hz display but the $2400 Macbook Pro 16" requires you to spend an extra $600 to get it. It sends a really weird message to the Pro community.

I do think that the new Macbook Pros will get an XDR 120hz display. It makes for consistent messaging that Pro devices have 120hz displays, including the upcoming iPhone 13 Pro. I don't know why the iPad Pro 11" doesn't have it though.

I could also envision a world where the 14" MBP doesn't have it but the 16" does if the manufacturing yields can't keep up this year. It's possible that this is why the iPad Pro 11" doesn't have it.

There aren't that many 1600p displays with high refresh rates. 1440p144 displays are somewhat common though as are 1080p240 displays.

It would be nice for Apple to go high refresh with their hidpi displays though.

Well shipping to from the display factory to Apple manufacturing is not the same as shipping a final product. If the rumor is correct and shipping to manufacturing starts in July, getting finished product out in early July is probably going to be a problem.

Who knows if the rumor is correct though. I’m pretty sure that Apple wouldn’t want more than about 30 days delay from an announcement at WWDC to first customer shipments.

I think we either won't get mini-LED this year or there is no MBP announcement next week.

Either will make me sad.
