No, in my opinion we have to get a Mac Pro before ANYTHING ELSE - it's the last Mac they need to transition...

We might get an M2 iPad Pro and maybe an M2 Mac mini, and, aside from the Mac Pro, that's it.

I sure hope not. With the price increase, I would hope to get more than a year out of my MBP before it becomes obsolete. Not like this is a phone, that we replace once a year. My first MBP was *only* $2K, two years later it jumped to $2400, then three years later $2700, and now $3400 six years later (2015 - 2021) 😲

I predict that Apple will release the M2-Pro/Max MacBook Pros first and a future large Air will be 15" for the same reason that the regular Air is not 14".

They'd probably wait until they come out with the M2 Mac Minis to do so, because they still need a somewhat beefed-up Apple Silicon Mini to replace that remaining Intel one. Said Mini could have the M2 Pro chip, and then the new 14" and 16" MacBook Pros could have the M2 Pro and Max chips.

I think this 5nm vs 3nm and A15 vs A16 discussion is really interesting.

If we get something in Spring 2023, you'd think that it'll be 3nm. What else could Apple be using the 3nm for in Q4 based on the reports? And if it's 3nm, it'll be interesting if Apple will skip straight to the A16 and call it M3 Pro/Max. And M2 will not have a Pro/Max. And the M3 Pro/Max would come out before the M3.

I think it'd be pretty weird regardless. If Apple doesn't use the A16 for 3nm and call the chips M3 Pro/Max, then having 3nm A15 SoC and calling it M2 Pro/Max is also weird.

If we get something in Q4 2022, it'll have to be 5nm and A15.

Personally, I'd like to see Apple release a 5nm M2 Pro/Max in Q4 2022. I think getting the laptops out sooner than later is better for sales and having a predictable yearly cadence is more important.

I want to see Apple release 5nm M2 Pro/Max/Ultra in Q4 2022. M3 3nm for the Air in Spring 2023. Summer 2023 for M3 Pro/Max. Q4 2023 for Ultra/Extreme.

And keep it that way permanently just like how the iPhone release schedule is permanent.

Assuming it's on 5nm I think Apple will want to get M2 Pro/Max out of the door a little ahead of Raptor Lake so it can be king of the hill for a few weeks by having the marketing benchmarks use Alder Lake numbers. That implies a release date as soon as early October.

If it's 3nm then Apple can afford to wait a bit and release next Spring and still be favourably compared to Raptor Lake and Zen 4.

Overall though I suspect that M2 Pro/Max will be a fairly minor upgrade and Apple will be spending an awful lot of time emphasising neural engine improvements and the overall speed boost due to higher clocks rather than anything super fancy or interesting.

Yes M2 Pro/Max refresh with N5P process node will probably be released later this year or early 2023.

Yes, I’m going to predict an update of M2 Pro and Max - on 5nm - for the MBPs this year.

Why? This is Apple’s ‘tock’ cycle in chip terms and is literally just a case of swapping out the SoC without the need to invest in other upgrades. In other words, it’s an easy update. Apple doesn’t need to wait on hand and foot for Intel anymore - the designs and production are on their terms.

I doubt it will even be given considerable time upon reveal because M2 vanilla already paints a picture of what to expect. The arrival of 3nm, however, could potentially bring new designs and benefits.

But also, revealing M2 Pro and Max this year is more a means to an end in order to get the Mac Pro out the door. After all, would Apple really reveal its Mac Pro SoC before the lesser Pro and Max chips?

I believe part of the reason why Apple chose to wait until the M2 generation for the Mac Pro was because of the greater memory bandwidth and RAM capacities.

Finally, as an M1 Pro owner I would say there’s no need to hold out. These systems are crazy powerful and they will be good for many, many years. If anything the M1 generation should run cooler than the M2…
