i have it turned off personally. Is it better to use the macbook pro with it on? Whats the idea behind this to begin with, to make using the mac easier on the eyes?

It's purpose is to match the white point of your surroundings. In theory it should be easier on your eyes as it reduces the cool hue Apple is known for on all their displays.

Night Shift on the other hand is supposed to help reduce blue light which is a separate thing all together as it changes the warm hue.
