Right now I am satisfied with the speed etc of my X. What I really want to see a change in is the iOS. I want to see a visual difference and new features added via software. I feel like we have been sort of stuck in small incremental updates on the software side...where most of the experience is exactly the same as the previous release. Here is to hoping that Apple is working on something exciting for the next big upgrade!

Definitely software. I hope iOS 12 brings a change to the user interface (as might suggest the image of the WWDC invitation) remained unchanged by iOS 7 and that is getting boring with all that flat style.
Aside from minor visual tweaks (and added features), iOS 11.x is essentially the same interface we’ve been using since the first iPhone.
Little changes here and there. But if someone came from the first iPhone to the latest iPhone, they wouldn’t really feel like they have to relearn the interface.
The changes from then to now are hardly as significant as moving from menu based flip phones with push buttons, to the iPhone.
A change as significant and fresh feeling is unlikely until we no longer have a physical phone.
We should just be seeing and hearing holographic likenesses of people and devices that react to our “touch” of approximation to where a holographic image is. That’s likely what it’s going to take before anything really “feels” new and significantly different.

Why not have both? Both, I probably go with software since much can be improved. For hardware, it has to be worth my while or how much difference it is from my current device to upgrade. I may not upgrade this year but maybe next year for 5G.
I always think hardware is superficial. It’s nice to have and appreciate the upgrades with the camera, glass design, etc. But in terms of what Apple is about is software. Most users long-term want to see software improvements with iOS and that is where the iPhone experience is truly defined. That is why they have such a strong following is because of the software and what it offers terms of fluidity, Longevity and security.
