I went this year from iPad Pro 12.9 M1 to iPad Pro 11 M4, I like the portability and it is overall great.
I have bought Apple Pencil Pro but this time I am not writing any notes as I think 11” display is so small to write on it.
There is not much space to ly my hands and writing more than few words on display. Maybe I just write in big fonts.
When I had iPad Pro 12.9 I studied master degree and used Notability app a lot but now I do not need it anymore. But still my feeling would be it is not convenient for writing.

What is your experience? Do you use iPad Pro 11 for writing?

Can you share what productivity apps do u use? How does iPad Pro 11” helps you?

It's just like writing in a A5 notebook verses an A4 sheet of paper. Do you have trouble writing in a standard sized A5 notebook?

Nice point of view! I write in landscape mode, so then the writing experience is different.

Ahhh! Right I get it now! Yes, I totally see what you mean. I prefer the 12.9 either way, but I have both and in portrait (how I write notes), the 11 just feels like a smaller real life notebook.

I write daily and hours on this 11”.
My precious was a 12.9” and that is nicer to write on. It also nicer to read magazines on the 13”. But the iPad is both a secondary/ primary device for me and portability is really nice.
My iPad is secondary when I have my laptop with me or when I’m working in my home office. Then it is just a second screen, note taking device, reference book, calendar etc.
but often when I’m at the office, I don’t bring my laptop. All I need is my iPad for meeting: pencil note taking, searching through mails, writing short replies, that kind of stuff. And when I’ve got a few hours between meetings (not that often) then I’ll find a flex desk, connect it to a wide screen and have a decent work station. It a laptop, but that is mainly because Microsoft office is so crippled on iOS and web.
But the writing in an iPad is absolutely the killer feature for me.

You did write on the 12.9” in landscape?! That is a huge page width?!

The 11” is like any regular A5 note taking book. The 13” is like a college sized note book. But in landscape it becomes huge!?

The advantage in landscape with a big screen is that one can have an a5 sized notepad alongside a reference app, like Safari or another note instance, for example.

All the time. I annotate on pdf documents in notability (when teaching in class) or take notes in the Notes app. Never felt it was too cramped or small, but maybe I am also just used to it.

You do realize that the 11" M4 iPad Pro is larger than e-readers that are specialized at writing with a pencil?

The remarkable 2 and Kindle Scribe are for example 10", which is the size of A5 paper.

Considering the new 11" Pro for journaling, but conflicted to go with tired and true paper too. I have a 2017 iPad Pro that I rarely use/used. Seems like an 11" would make a great portable writing tool.

Yes it is. But it is because it does everything for my work and some side things. It has mail, word, huge archives etc.
And I can search through my handwriting in Goodnotes.
So I also journal in another app like Nebo or notability.
But if I wouldn’t need an iPad for work etc and I would be regular behind my desk at home? Really nice tomoe river paper notebook, a Conid fountain pen and Mont Blanc permanent ink!!
And if it would be just for journaling I think that an iPad is really expensive, it needs to be charged, you need to replace it every 4-7 years, you need a pencil and/or a keyboard.
That buys a you a huge amount of paper and ink and a really really nice fountain pen!

But the most important point is distraction. When writing on paper there is no distraction build in. You can concentrate, contemplate, write in a more subconscious stream of thought. If that is what you are looking for, be weary of any digital device that does more then one thing.
